Referee Clement Turpin first made the incorrect decision on Ibrahima Konate’s penalty challenge against Galatasaray.
That is according to veteran Premier League referee and PGMOL director Jon Moss, who exclusively informed Football Insider that the officials eventually reached the correct decision after a VAR review.
Liverpool lost 1-0 to Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday (30 September), with Victor Osimhen scoring from the penalty spot in the first half.
Arne Slot was chastised for starting Dominik Szoboszlai at right back, and it was the Hungarian international who conceded the penalty, striking Baris Alper Yilmaz in the face with a flailing arm.
Ibrahima Konate penalty overturned in the last seconds
Liverpool earned a penalty in the final seconds of the game when Konate was brought down by Wilfried Singo.
The ball was bouncing in the Galatasaray area, with both Singo and the Reds centre back flailing their feet at it until referee Turpin indicated to the spot.
However, the decision was reversed following a VAR review, which revealed that Konatehad committed the foul himself.
