After activist Charlie Kirk was shot dead on Wednesday at Utah Valley University, football enthusiasts took to social media, particularly X (previously Twitter), to express their grave concerns about the United States hosting the forthcoming 2026 World Cup final.
Dad-of-two Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was shot in the neck while hosting an event on the university campus. President Donald Trump was rushed to a local hospital in an attempt to rescue him, and he later proclaimed his death. He wrote, “The Great and even Legendary Charlie Kirk has died.
“No one knew or possessed the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America like Charlie. He was loved and admired by everyone, including me, and he is no longer with us. Melania and I extend our condolences to his lovely wife Erika and their family. “We love you, Charlie.”
Fans call for the USA to be stripped of hosting duties for the 2026 World Cup

The 2026 World Cup will be held in Mexico, Canada, and the United States, with the latter hosting the majority of the matches, as planned. However, following the tragic loss of the 31-year-old, fans believe that the hosting team is urging FIFA to make a critical decision after voicing safety concerns.
The highly anticipated World Cup is set to begin on June 11, with the first US-hosted game taking place the next day in Los Angeles, but there is a widespread belief among supporters that it is simply not safe for America to host the international showpiece next summer, and that FIFA should reconsider their position.
To put America’s strong hosting position into context, 11 of the 16 host cities in all three countries are located in the United States. In addition, for convenience, all games after the quarterfinals will be played in the United States. The final will take place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

And, less than a year before the tournament begins, fans have complained that the United States no longer provides a safe environment for the millions of international fans who will fill the stadiums; Kirk’s death has sparked widespread worry among supporters.
“America should be stripped of the World Cup,” one stated, while another agreed that it is too dangerous, writing: “With the broad daylight shooting and killing of Charlie Kirk, America should not be allowed by FIFA to co-host the World Cup.” A third fan commented, “Once again, staging the World Cup in America is a poor idea. “The Charlie Kirk news is heartbreaking.”
The same remark was mirrored by another, who wrote: “The World Cup shouldn’t be played anywhere near the USA,” before adding: “Kinda scary to think that the USA will host the World Cup next year.” Another stated that, in order to send a message to the American people, FIFA should do the right thing and relieve them of the responsibility of hosting the competition.
“It is time to demonstrate. The World Cup cannot be held there. Change is required for our own safety and to convey a message to the United States.”
“The World Cup cannot go ahead in America for everyone’s safety,” another commented, before suggesting that Mexico and Canada could take over full hosting rights: “The United States is not a safe place to host the World Cup.” “Keep it in Canada and Mexico.” The entire reaction ended with the question, “How will the World Cup be held in an unsafe country after the scenes of Charlie Kirk’s murder?”
