As the countdown to the 2026 World Cup reaches its final ten months, speculation on England’s 23-man squad intensifies ahead of the event in the United States, Canada, and Mexico next summer. After eight months in charge, Thomas Tuchel’s vision for life after Gareth Southgate is beginning to take shape.
The recent 5-0 demolition of Serbia has given England much to celebrate, putting the Three Lions in strong contention to end a 60-year trophy drought when they travel across the pond. However, a mediocre 2-0 victory against 174th-ranked Andorra, followed by a 3-1 home loss to Senegal, will undoubtedly have the pessimists sharpening their knives.
While it is still too early to forecast the final team with certainty, we have conducted a thorough analysis of current record and Tuchel’s apparent preferences to generate a tentative roster based on power rankings. Players like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Phil Foden have the talent to fly but are currently hampered by inconsistent club form.
Goalkeepers

Jordan Pickford has been the only constant in England’s backline for nearly a decade, making his place, along with captain Harry Kane’s, possibly the safest to predict. Dean Henderson, his likely understudy, has twice been a penalty shootout hero at Wembley Stadium in recent months, featuring in Crystal Palace’s FA Cup and Community Shield victories.
James Trafford is the most recent third-choice custodian, coming off a spectacular season in the Championship with Burnley, when he held a record 30 clean sheets and conceded only 13 goals. However, with minimal game time at Manchester City this season due to the acquisition of Gianluigi Donnarumma, Trafford is anticipated to be supplanted by Nick Pope.
Pope’s performances behind a sturdy Newcastle defence should assist to solidify his place in the squad after missing much of the previous season due to injury.

Defenders

While John Stones hasn’t played much for Manchester City or England since Tuchel took over in January, he’s still one of the most composed defenders around. Even if some other well-known players are absent due to injury or form, it’s difficult to imagine anyone forgetting the 31-year-old, given his tournament experience – providing he’s fit.
Marc Guehi is perhaps England’s greatest defender right now, while Dan Burn’s outstanding form for Newcastle has helped Eddie Howe’s team become one of the most stingy in the country, making him an obvious choice. Ezri Konsa provides versatility and consistency, as does Trevoh Chalobah, who can play throughout the backline and has shined for Chelsea since Levi Colwill’s injury boosted his minutes, even if he is still a one-cap player for the time being.
Although Tino Livramento has shown promise, Myles Lewis-Skelly appears to be England’s best left-back right now. On the right, the argument between Kyle Walker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kieran Trippier, and Reece James has mostly resolved on James, who has started all five of Tuchel’s World Cup qualifiers and has showed a stunning return to form, free of the problems that previously plagued him.

Midfielders

Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham are two of the top midfielders in the world right now, and each might easily be regarded as the best player in his league. Tuchel should have no issue fielding both during next summer’s football festival, and many matches will be decided in the engine room.
Tuchel’s predecessor frequently struggled to find a third midfielder who would properly complement the duo. Some alternatives were too attack-minded, leaving spaces in midfield, while others were unduly cautious. Fortunately, players like Elliot Anderson, who won both man-of-the-match accolades during the most recent international break, and Adam Wharton provide the present manager with a plethora of dependable, hard-working choices in the midfield.
When inventiveness is necessary, Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White provides an attacking spark, having scored seven goals and assisted eight times in the Premier League last season. Meanwhile, Cole Palmer and Eberechi Eze, who are normally listed as forwards, may easily fill the role of number 10.
Meanwhile, Morgan Rogers and Phil Foden have the potential to force their way onto the plane if they hit a purple patch between now and June.

Forwards

Harry Kane has scored 65 goals in as many Bundesliga appearances since joining Bayern Munich in 2023, and as England’s all-time leading scorer, it would take something spectacularly wrong for the 32-year-old to be dropped from Tuchel’s squad, especially since he continues to wear the captain’s armband.
In virtually any other period, Ollie Watkins would play in the number nine position, with his prolific form at Aston Villa solidifying him as one of the world’s top attackers in recent years. Jarrod Bowen isn’t a bad third option either, routinely pulling up trees for a failing West Ham team. Tuchel clearly does not have a problem with scoring, as his three centre-forward options scored a combined 55 goals in their respective leagues during the 2024/25 season.
Tuchel has showed a preference for pace on the left wing, starting Noni Madueke on numerous occasions in recent games. However, his Arsenal minutes are directly related to Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka, therefore his spot is far from sure. Anthony Gordon, who is as quick and tenacious in the press, appears poised to provide a comparable alternative if Madueke’s present form does not endure as long as everyone anticipates.

Starting Lineup

Tuchel must strike a balance between England’s big-name stars and the so-called “system players” – those prepared to perform the grunt work that keeps the team going. Certain names are obvious choices: Pickford, Guehi, Stones, Rice, Bellingham, and Kane, while Saka has long been a favourite of both his manager and the Three Lions’ creative setup.
Having a player like Cole Palmer on the bench is a luxury, not a concern. Tuchel may even start him at number 10 against deeper defensive blocks, with Bellingham sliding slightly deeper to take Anderson’s midfield responsibilities. For the time being, the 4-2-3-1 style appears to be Tuchel’s template, and the current lineup represents England’s best chance of making another deep run in a major tournament – only this time, the ambition is to go a step further and eventually add a second star.
