What’s Happened to Dele Alli Since Nightmare Como Debut

In brief
Since being sent off on his debut, Alli has not played for his Italian team Como and has been an unused substitute.
Despite setbacks and injuries, he wants to be included in England’s 2026 World Cup squad.
After reaching its pinnacle in 2017, Alli’s career took a bad turn because to off-field problems and mental health challenges.
Dele Alli’s comeback to football was marked by a red card after ten minutes for Como, over two months ago. However, a health check is necessary now that the commotion surrounding that occurrence has subsided. Before making his Serie A debut, the Englishman, who is regarded as one of the football players with the most unrealized potential in history, had been out of action for 748 days.

Late in the match at the San Siro, Como manager Cesc Fabregas substituted Lucas Da Cunha for the former Spurs player as the visitors attempted to earn a well-earned point against AC Milan. But when Dele ran his studs down the back of Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s knees in a fit of uncontrolled rage, the moment swiftly darkened. Kyle Walker, a friend and former Tottenham teammate, tried to argue his point, but the referee, after examining the pitchside monitor, had no qualms about showing red. View the incident below:

Regaining a love for football has been a difficult and drawn-out process. Nevertheless, Dele’s age of just 29 is a sobering reminder of how profoundly his struggles with mental illness have affected his career, as well as a hopeful sign that there is still time to write a happy ending.

Two months after receiving his red card, Dele Alli has mostly been relegated to the role of an unutilized substitute.

He has mostly been consigned to being an unused substitute

Como’s 2-1 loss to AC Milan is still their sole loss in their past seven Serie A games, and Fabregas’ team is still comfortably positioned in midtable. Dele, meanwhile, has been a wasted substitute and hasn’t really contributed to the Italian underdogs’ success this run.

According to the Daily Mail, Fabregas recently told reporters in a midweek interview that playing time is only given to those who work hard on the training field. He urged Alli to follow suit if he wants to make a second appearance after making his trial spell official in January. He stated:

“Those that train hard and secure a slot during the week are the ones I play. Dele Alli must continue to work. Milan gave him a chance, but he was sent off after being hurt. It just happens when the timing is right. With the exception of Sergi Roberto and Dossena, everyone is accessible, and [Anastasios] Douvikas has trained well.

The most important thing at the moment is that, even though Dele isn’t playing, he has at least found a welcoming atmosphere where there are low expectations and a lot of faith in him. There was a genuine sense that the Englishman had to establish himself rapidly at teams like Besiktas and Everton, but he isn’t under the same pressure in Italy.

Nevertheless, his own expectations are still extremely high. He stated to Sky Sports last month that he hopes to join England’s 2026 World Cup squad, despite attempting to recover from hip and groin ailments. According to BBC Sport, he stated, “I have a reminder on my phone every single day at 11 o’clock – World Cup 2026,”

‘He hasn’t played in a year,’ people will say, but that’s my goal. I am aware of my level.
