Mason Greenwood’s exile from Manchester United first appeared to be going well in Marseille. The 23-year-old scored twice, provided two assists, and won a penalty in a 5-1 thumping in Brest, swiftly winning over the fans and becoming a talisman for the French team. However, his recent decline in form, especially in terms of attitude, has received increasing criticism, and one of Europe’s most ardent and demanding fan groups has not been afraid to voice its unhappiness.
In 2022, Greenwood was essentially expelled from English football due to severe off-field accusations. His reputation was already harmed, even if the Crown Prosecution Service dismissed all allegations in February 2023. After conducting an internal inquiry, the Red Devils’ management concluded it would be better to let him to resume his career elsewhere.
Before making a permanent transfer to Marseille in 2024, he played the 2023–2024 season on loan at Getafe in Spain. However, what started out as a dream start has since stalled. Although many have rallied to Greenwood’s aid, his manager and supporters at the Stade Velodrome have been vocally unhappy with his recent performances.
What Marseille Fans Are Saying About Mason Greenwood
His ‘attitude problems’ saw a banner unfurled at the Stade Velodrome

Greenwood’s attitude has been the main source of recent complaints, as manager Roberto De Zerbi recently benched him from the starting lineup due to his work rate.
Marseille supporters aren’t one to be silent on the subject, and a banner calling on the Englishman to work harder was unfurled on the north bend of the Orange Velodrome prior to Saturday’s Ligue 1 encounter against Montpellier.
The English text on the banner, which was also directed at Greenwood’s colleague Luis Henrique, read as follows:
“Greenwood, Henrique, get moving!!!”
Other Marseille Fans Defend Greenwood After Scoring Twice
The Englishman scored twice to win vote of confidence from other fans

Early in his team’s 5-1 victory over Montpellier, Greenwood made apologies by scoring a penalty kick within eight minutes. He subsequently scored his second goal in the 67th minute, bringing his season total of 18 goals in Ligue 1. Based on internet comments, it appears that just a tiny percentage of Marseille fans are worried about his performances.
“Once again they demonstrate their stupidity,” extolled one Greenwood admirer. Then they included:
“A football game is played and won by 11 players, not by one or two. He scored twice and is the team’s best player and talent. This is his best season as a young player.” These backers are true fools.
“This obsession is starting to get out of hand, especially when you see the incompetence of other players who really don’t do any better,” said another, and “A****les to put that on Greenwood!!!” said a third. We’re not even in the top half of the standings, and he’s not here! Then they whine about how great players don’t visit OM! Really, a****les!”
