When asked to remark on Andre Onana prior to Manchester United’s match against Lyon in the Europa League, the legendary player Paul Scholes did not hold back under any circumstances.
At Old Trafford, Manchester United played host to Lyon, a team from Ligue 1 for the second leg of their Europa League quarterfinal matchup. The match took place on Thursday night.
Andre Onana, the custodian for United, was under intense scrutiny prior to the match because of his poor performance in the first leg, which resulted in a 2-2 draw. As a result, all eyes were on him heading into the second leg, which was played at United’s home stadium.
Nevertheless, before the second leg of the match began on Thursday, the legendary player for Manchester United, Scholes, added to the pressure that was already being put on the Cameroonian by making a harsh statement about his time spent at Old Trafford.
When Onana addressed the media prior to the first leg of the match, which was scheduled to take place at Groupama Stadium in Lyon, he made the contentious assertion that his team ought to advance since they had a far superior team.
As a consequence of this, the United custodian was responsible for both of the goals that his team surrendered in Lyon. As a result, Scholes suggested that his teammates should refrain from letting him to participate in the critical home match.
During an interview with TNT Sports, the former United midfielder made the following statement on Onana: “Keep the ball away from him.” To tell you the truth, you shouldn’t even hand it back to him; instead, you should pass it to Højlund.
Rio Ferdinand, a former teammate of Scholes’s and a fellow commentator, reiterated the statements that Scholes made, saying, “I quite liked playing with goalkeepers who I don’t want to see or hear much.” My goal is to avoid becoming concerned about them.
“When your confidence is low, you need to play games and make sure that no one is talking about you,” she said. When it comes to gaming, you do not want it to be all about you.
When you are asked to make the save, you should immediately stand up and continue with the task at hand. Those shiny items should be avoided at all costs since that is when troubles begin to take place.
Fortunately for Onana, the strain that was being placed on him was alleviated early on in the match that was taking place at Old Trafford. Manuel Ugarte gave the home team a 1-0 lead, and Diogo Dalot added another goal to the tally before halftime.
Following a strike by Lyon star Rayan Cherki, the United custodian made many basic stops and one significant save, giving the impression that he was quite confident in his position during the first half of the match.
And it is evident that he is eager to see his team secure a spot in the semi-finals, where they would face either Athletic Club or Rangers. He was spotted cheering in front of the Lyon fans who were travelling with them when United grabbed the lead in the tenth minute of the match.
