UEFA explain why Kylian Mbappe penalty was overturned after farcical six minute wait

UEFA has provided an explanation for why a penalty that was first awarded for a foul committed by Kylian Mbappe was reversed following a lengthy and perplexing review by the video assistant referee.

The French referee Francois Letexier gestured to the penalty spot for the second time during Real Madrid’s Champions League quarterfinal match against Arsenal. At the time, Real Madrid was attempting to overcome a 3-0 deficit from the first leg of the semifinal match.

When Letexier awarded Real Madrid a penalty kick for a foul on Mbappe committed by Declan Rice, who was found to have hauled the striker back in the area, Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka had previously seen his effort at a Panenka penalty saved by Thibaut Courtois. Letexier allowed Real Madrid to take the penalty kick.

Rice, who was responsible for two of the three goals scored by the Gunners in the first leg, was had to wait for an anxious period of six minutes while the decision was being reviewed.

While the video assistant referee crew was evaluating the event itself, they also turned their focus to the likelihood that Mbappe was slightly offside when the ball was flicked on in his direction. This was done after they had spent part of that time analysing the incident itself.

In point of fact, viewers on television may have noted that the chyron that was displayed on the screen and informed that the judgement had been reversed verified offside as the cause for the outcome of not being punished.

Nevertheless, additional explanation from UEFA during the first half at the Bernabeu proved the true cause for the overturned penalty. This occurred after Letexier examined his first judgement on a pitchside monitor.

The governing body of Europe issued a statement to the public in a short amount of time, clarifying that the ultimate conclusion in the matter was that Rice did not commit a foul on Mbappe.

The midfielder for Arsenal was initially cautioned for a foul, which would have resulted in him being excluded from the first leg of the semi-final if Arsenal were to advance to the next round.

Rice’s yellow card was removed as a result of Letexier’s decision to overturn the penalty ruling, which allowed him to resume his participation in the match against PSG.

The penalty kick that was taken by England winger Saka and saved by Courtois despite being taken by the Gunners was another example of a judgement that was reversed.

On that particular case, Letexier had not witnessed the event, and he decided to give the penalty kick after recommending that an on-field review be conducted.
