Despite a strong battle against Paris Saint-Germain, Aston Villa was eliminated from the Champions League in the quarterfinal stage.
The French team led 3-1 at home going into the second leg, and goals from Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes within the first 30 minutes increased that lead to 5-1. But the Villans refused to give up lightly, and before halftime, they were able to rally through Youri Tielemans.
Ezri Konsa and John McGinn’s goals in the second half created an exciting final half, but Unai Emery’s team was unable to score another goal, which would have forced extra time.
Marcus Rashford was instrumental in the comeback, most notably providing a spectacular pass that allowed Konsa to score Villa’s third goal of the evening. Despite the local press being blown away by the winger, French media were not too delighted with the Englishman and gave him mixed evaluations for his efforts.
Rashford’s inconsistencies did not impress the French media.
L’Equipe only rated him a 6 out of 10.

90min’s French source were among many who felt he failed to continuously play at a high level throughout the game, they handed Rashford a 6/10 for his efforts and stated he was ‘lively but clumsy’, before applauding his improved stint in the second half. In full, Quentin Gesp wrote:
“Preferred once again to Ollie Watkins, Marcus Rashford initially showed himself to be lively yet clumsy. The Parisians found the opening on a second loss after losing the ball in the eighth minute. Nuno Mendes, who was discovered by Fabian Ruiz, led Bradley Barcola on the counterattack by himself, trailing Matty Cash as he advanced. The remainder of the match ended up in the Villans’ goalkeeper’s net. Despite posing a threat from deep, the English striker’s decisions lacked spontaneity. It was a tough first half for him and his fans, who were occasionally irritated. Additionally, he was unsuccessful because Donnarumma (52nd) stopped him after this box mix-up.
However, his second half was entirely different. He was more straightforward and accurate, and he provided the Villans with the risk and originality they required. He made the Italian goalie make a spectacular save (57th). He was the one who put the Villans ahead in the process following a fantastic bridge and a superb pass for Konsa (58th).
Maxifoot acknowledged that he improved later in the game, but they were nonetheless disappointed by his first-half performances. As a result, Damien Da Silva wrote that he received a player rating of 6.5.
“The Aston Villa striker, who was preferred to Watkins up front, gave a two-part performance. Despite his attempts, the Englishman was flawless and had intriguing combinations, particularly on Tielemans’ goal, although he wasn’t particularly dangerous in the first half. The Manchester United loanee’s involvement after the interval was more intriguing. He was the architect of a huge job for Konza’s goal after being checked by Donnarumma on a close-range shot and then on a stunning strike.
French sports publication Rashford received a 6/10 from L’Equipe, a site known for its critical player evaluations, for his efforts. They saved their commendation for McGinn, who was said to as a “exemplary” player.
Associated with Unai Emery’s Key Aston Villa’s loss to PSG was caused by Marcus Rashford’s poor decision.
The team may have lost because of their own manager, even if they were very near to pulling off a comeback against PSG.
