Fans have been left bewildered after watching Aston Villa against Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League.
As Unai Emery’s team attempted to overcome a 3-1 first-leg loss to Paris Saint-Germain, a remarkable night occurred inside Villa Park on Tuesday night. The match was about to take place.
Following the goals scored by Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes inside the opening thirty minutes of the match, the away team appeared to have eliminated Villa’s chances of winning the tie.
The goal scored by Youri Tielemans in the 34th minute, however, provided Villa with a glimmer of optimism going into the second half.
Ezri Konsa then made it 3-2 in the 57th minute, setting up a tense conclusion to the encounter. John McGinn then tied the score for Villa, with Ezri Konsa making it 3-2.
Unai Emery took the choice to put on Marco Asensio with 67 minutes remaining on the clock by bringing him on.
Due to the fact that Asensio had joined Villa on loan from Paris Saint-Germain during the January transfer window, the decision caused some confusion among fans.
A fan posted the following question on social media: “Does the UEFA rules operate differently?
“How can Asensio play for Villa when he’s played for PSG already in this competition and on loan from them.”
Another tweeted: “Asensio playing against PSG while on loan Villa is sending me under.”
A third fan added: “What is this regulation where you may play against your parent club, don’t believe I like it.
In the Premier League, players are not permitted to play against their parent club.
Why was Marco Asensio permitted to play against PSG?
However, in UEFA tournaments, such restriction does not apply.
As stated by talkSPORT, Asensio was permitted to play against PSG as UEFA regulations specify ‘that clubs cannot use ‘any influence whatsoever over the players that another club may (or may not) deploy in a match’.
Samuel Iling-Junior, a great player for Villa, was granted permission to play for Bologna at Villa Park earlier in the season. He had joined the Italian club on loan from the Premier League club.
When Philippe Coutinho was playing for Bayern Munich against his parent club Barcelona a few years back, he scored twice for the Bavarians, and the Bavarians ended up winning 8-2 at the end of the match.
In 2014, while Thibaut Courtois was on loan at Atletico Madrid, he participated in a match against Chelsea. The match ended with Atletico Madrid prevailing 3-1 from Chelsea.
In the end, Paris Saint-Germain prevailed to go to the semifinals with a 5-4 aggregate score. They will face either Arsenal or Real Madrid in the semifinals.
