In conclusion, Adnan Januzaj showed great promise at Old Trafford by scoring two goals in his maiden Premier League appearance.
At the age of 18, Januzaj was given a larger deal than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo due to his potential.
Far from his once bright beginning, Januzaj is now facing injury problems and relegation at Las Palmas.
Football fans are all too quick to play the game of predicting a wonderkid’s future, despite the fact that it is frequently a foolish undertaking. It is impossible to predict what will happen to young athletes, particularly when they are tasked with representing some of the world’s largest teams.
Lamine Yamal is one of those people that get right in. They appear to be unfazed by the pressure and possess the corresponding technical skill. There are, meanwhile, many potential stars who appear destined to succeed but ultimately fail miserably. Because they have seen players like Federico Macheda and Ravel Morrison fall short of their previous expectations, Manchester United supporters are well aware of this.
Adnan Januzaj is another name with a like tale. As a youngster, the Belgian international was the talk of European football, drawing interest from a number of elite clubs and becoming the focal point of a competition between many national teams. Januzaj is currently 30, which is generally regarded as his prime playing years. But few would have predicted the course of his adventure.
Januzaj’s Manchester United Career
The youngster shone for United after Sir Alex Ferguson left the club

Born in Belgium, Januzaj began playing for Anderlecht as a young player before being signed by the Red Devils in 2011 at the age of 16. Since the adolescent was not used as a substitute in the 5–5 draw against West Bromwich Albion, fans would have first seen him in and around the first team during Sir Alex Ferguson’s penultimate game as the club’s manager.
The following season, when David Moyes was in charge, Januzaj made a few brief outings before receiving his big break. The winger gave his team all three points in a match he would have dreamed of the night before by scoring twice, including an amazing volley, in his debut Premier League start against Sunderland.
Januzaj became a beloved character at Old Trafford after that. As they rejoiced over the birth of their next big star, they bought his shirt in droves and sang his name. United signed him to a five-year contract at the Theatre of Dreams worth £30,000 per week, more than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo made at his age, in an attempt to prevent another scenario similar to that of Paul Pogba, where a well-known young star may depart on a free. As a testament to the club’s belief in him, he was given the number 11 shirt that had once belonged to Ryan Giggs after finishing his first complete season with four goals and six assists in 35 games.
But not everyone embraced his breakthrough season. According to reports, several of his teammates were not happy with how Januzaj swiftly rose to the top of the fan base during a challenging time for the squad. Additionally, Andy Mitten said that his strong relationship with Moyes, who said the Belgian reminded him of Johan Cruyff, caused him to become estranged from the other players in the dressing room:
The other players experienced issues as a result of Januzaj’s ascent. They were already struggling because to the decline in their performance and Moyes’ stay. When a confident, cap-wearing kid joined the first squad and began to be sung to in a beautiful song by supporters who were trying to find some silver linings in the car crash that was United’s 2013–14 season, the players didn’t like it.
“Januzaj acted as though he had won the lottery, cocky as a teenager who likely needs to be to make it into United’s first squad. Additionally, he was perceived as Moyes’ man, which wasn’t good considering the manager was struggling with his players as the club disintegrated.
Things were never the same once Moyes left. The young player didn’t score the next season, which made Louis van Gaal unhappy. After failing to make an impression during a half-season loan at Borussia Dortmund in 2015, he returned to United. His tenure at Sunderland the following season, once more under Moyes, is comparable. By 2017, Januzaj’s time at United was over, as he signed a permanent contract with Real Sociedad, ending his dreams of playing at Old Trafford.
Januzaj’s Career Post United
The attacker is struggling for game time in Spain

At the very least, Januzaj’s fortunes improved after moving to Sociedad. He played for the team for five years, and during the 2019–20 season, he even won the Copa del Rey. Despite interest from teams like England, Albania, Serbia, and Kosovo, Belgium had already won the battle to have him play for them internationally, but his performances during that time were good enough to get him a spot in their 2018 World Cup squad.
The Red Devils would finish third in the competition that summer, and he would score against the Three Lions. But in the end, that period would turn out to be the pinnacle of his career. After joining Sevilla in 2022, he was loaned to Basaksehir FK in Turkey by the middle of the season.
He went on loan to Las Palmas in 2024, but he hasn’t been able to get any playing time since. Due to recurrent injuries, he has only made 14 appearances as of this writing, only three of which have been starts. There is a good likelihood that Januzaj will be relegated because Las Palmas, who also have players like Oliver McBurnie, a former Sheffield United striker, among others, are currently in the bottom three of La Liga.

His future will once again be uncertain when he returns to Sevilla, regardless of what transpires this term. He probably won’t get another chance at Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium. On the other hand, any expectation that he will be able to reach the level that was previously expected of him has vanished into thin air. However, given the remaining glimpses, perhaps there will be a final resurgence that will just increase people’s already existing “what if” questions.
