A report has surfaced regarding the actions that Manchester United players took with Andre Onana after the final whistle of their match against Lyon, and it does not appear to be a positive development.
In Thursday’s Europa League match, Manchester United and Lyon played to a scoreless draw.
Thiago Almada scored the opening goal in the 25th minute, while Leny Yoro scored the equaliser in the 25th minute of stoppage time in the first half.
A cross from Bruno Fernandes was converted into a goal by Joshua Zirkzee, who scored the game-winning goal for his team with just two minutes remaining on the clock.
Until Rayan Cherki seized on Onana’s blunder to tie the game in stoppage time, it appeared as though the Red Devils were going to carry a one-goal edge into the second leg of the match that will take place the following week.
Altay Bayindir, the backup goalkeeper, ‘patted’ Onana in the centre circle as the players and officials crowded around him after the final whistle blew as the game was over.
As teammates consoled Onana before he put his hands on his head, the Manchester Evening News described him as “statuesque.” Onana was reportedly comforted by the players.
On the other hand, “nobody embraced him tightly,” and “some” were reluctant to connect with their custodian after he made his most recent mistake.
Ever since Onana made nine mistakes for Manchester United, the club has ‘started negotiations’ with a custodian who is valued at sixty million pounds as a potential replacement.
Cherki made a dig at Onana after the game, following in the footsteps of Nemanja Matic, who had previously taunted Onana. Cherki’s comments were in response to that player’s pre-match remarks.
In spite of the fact that Onana has been performing poorly in goal, Ruben Amorim has come to Onana’s support, arguing that he has made more errors in his role as manager of Manchester United.
“If you look at the season I’ve made more mistakes than them during these last games and during these last months,” he said to reporters.
“At this very moment, there is nothing that I can say to Andre that will be of any use to him. Therefore, the most essential thing is to be natural, and when the time comes, I will select the best eleven players to play. On the other hand, I have a lot of faith in Andre.
Since going to Old Trafford, Onana has mostly failed to impress, despite the fact that he has made 94 appearances across all competitions since his acquisition from Inter Milan for £47 million.
As part of their Premier League campaign, Manchester United will resume their match against Newcastle United on Sunday, marking their return to play.
