Nemanja Matic gave the impression that he was making a joke at Andre Onana after the Manchester United custodian made two mistakes that were extremely expensive as a result of a verbal spat between the two of them.
United’s match against Matic’s Lyon team in the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinals took place at the Groupama stadium. However, the match ended in a 2-2 draw as Rayan Cherki scored a late equaliser for United.
After falling behind by one goal due to a free kick that was taken by Thiago Almada and managed to sneak in, United managed to come back and win with goals from Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee before being brought back to within a goal at the very end of the match.
Onana was referred to as “one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history” during the pre-match news conference that was held for the French team by Matic, who had previously played as a midfielder for Manchester United.
After Onana had stated that United was a superior team to Lyon, he made his remarks immediately after.
As a kind of retaliation, the Cameroonian responded with a nasty jab of his own. The final sentence of a statement that he had written about X was as follows: “At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world.” Some people are unable to say the same thing.
However, Matic was the one who had the final laugh because Onana was the one who was responsible for both goals. Cherki was able to secure a draw for Paulo Foncesca’s team after the former Inter Milan player made a terrible mistake in judging Almada’s initial shot. He then failed to stop Almada’s second strike, which allowed Cherki to score.
The camera switched to Matic in the 89th minute, when United was ahead, despite the fact that he had been a replacement throughout the game and had neither been played.
Following the back and forth between the two players, it seemed as though there was no meeting between them; nonetheless, Matic was active on social media following such a meeting.
A photo of Matic’s kid, Filip, wearing a variety of shirts that he had gathered from his former colleagues, including Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, and Amad, was posted on Matic’s Instagram story.
However, the child posed directly next to the shirt of Tom Heaton, who was the third-choice custodian. This was a fairly handy situation.
With the description “Nice to see my brothers again,” Matic also posted a photo of himself with a number of United employees on his Instagram profile. The picture was accompanied by the comment.
Immediately following the game, Amorim made a statement that stated, “When one game has a mistake, the whole team has a mistake.” He refused to criticise Onana on an individual basis.
“No, we’ll continue to do the same thing in training, seeing the game and trying to choose the best eleven to win every match,” the Portuguese manager said in response to a question on whether or not he would consider dismissing his custodian.
