There is a rule in La Liga that is not widely known, and it will prevent Trent Alexander-Arnold from wearing the number 66 shirt while playing for Real Madrid.
The defender, who is 26 years old, has reportedly agreed to join Los Blancos. TalkSPORT claims that he has reached an agreement with the club regarding personal terms with regard to a lucrative five-year deal that is worth more than £220,000 per week.
The 20-year association that Alexander-Arnold has had with his boyhood club will come to an end if he does sign on the dotted line for Carlo Ancelotti’s side after months of negotiations. Alexander-Arnold’s contract with Liverpool, the leaders of the Premier League, expires this summer.
After joining Liverpool’s youth program in 2004, when he was only six years old, Trent went on to become the club’s captain for all of its youth levels before making his debut with the senior team in 2016.
Here, he wore the number 66, which was a shirt number that had been purposefully assigned to him by Lee Radcliffe, the club’s coordinator of kit management, in order to maintain the defender’s sense of modesty and prevent him from feeling as though he had already achieved success.
Throughout his time at Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold has always worn the number 66 shirt. However, if he were to join Real Madrid’s roster, the full-back would be required to switch his number to a different one.
This is due to the fact that the rules of La Liga require clubs to submit first-team squads consisting of 25 players, with numbers ranging from 1 to 25.
All of the players in the A-squad, which consists of 25 players, are required to wear a number between 1 and 25, while goalkeepers are required to wear either 1 or 13. The squad numbers that are assigned to players on the reserve team who are selected to play for the first team range from 26 to 50.
There are only three squad numbers available at Real Madrid at the time of this writing, despite the fact that Alexander-Arnold has previously worn the numbers 2, 7, 8, and 10 while representing England on the international stage.
In the present moment, the number 12 is the lowest available, while the numbers 24 and 25 are also available; however, the number 25 is typically reserved for the third-choice custodian.
During an interview with Sky Sports in December, Alexander-Arnold discussed his future plans and plans for the future.
“I have been at the club 20 years now and I have signed four or five contract extensions… and none of those have been played out in public,” he explained to reporters. “This one won’t be either.”
The player, who is now 26 years old, has previously stated that he will not continue to play for his boyhood club after this season.
When he was asked about his plans for the future, he responded by saying, “I have always said that I want to captain the club.” “That is a goal of mine, but it is not within my control whether or not it is accomplished. What I will say is that I want to be a player for Liverpool at the very least until the end of this season.
Alexander-Arnold provides the following response when asked about the factors that will have the most significant impact on his decision-making process: “The most important thing is always trophies.” I want to be awarded trophies. During the previous season, we came very close to winning the championship, and we ended up winning the cup. This (quadruple) had been going on for quite some time, I suppose.
“This season, we are looking really good, but it is still early days, and we need a lot of consistency,” he continued. “We need to be consistent.” We anticipate that it will be challenging, but our goal is to win as many trophies as we possibly can.
