Video footage has surfaced that shows Virgil van Dijk reprimanding a Paris Saint-Germain official while they were inside the Parc des Princes tunnel during the match.
In the first leg of their round of 16 match against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League, which took place on Wednesday night, Van Dijk led Liverpool as the team’s captain.
In spite of being dominated throughout the entire match, Liverpool managed to emerge victorious by a score of 1-0 thanks to the heroic performance of Alisson Becker and the goal scored by Harvey Elliott in the 87th minute.
Ibrahima Konate, a defender for the Reds, went through a nervous check from the video assistant referee (VAR) after he challenged Bradley Barcola, a player for Paris Saint-Germain, when Barcola was in a position to score.
Fortunately for Liverpool, the video assistant referee (VAR) determined that the referee had not made any glaringly obvious mistakes, and the match was quickly restarted.
Luis Campos, the Football Advisor for Paris Saint-Germain, was seen furiously reacting to the decision made by the referee in a video that has since been released. The video was taken inside the tunnel at Parc des Princes.
It was reported that he was heard yelling, “Red card or penalty!”
After that, Van Dijk made the following statement: “Comeon bro, it’s not Ligue 1 bro hey, it’s not Ligue 1.”
It appeared as though Campos was ignoring Van Dijk as he continued to yell out, “It’s a red card or penalty.”
Christina Unkel, a former FIFA referee, stated that Konate ought to have been shown a red card for his challenge on Barcola.
With regard to the play itself, she stated on CBS Sports, “I’m actually not going to agree with the referee or the video assistant referee.” I do believe that it ought to have been recommended down to a red card due to the fact that a goalscoring opportunity (DOGSO) was denied to the player.
We are talking about a DOGSO red card because the contact takes place here, which is essentially outside the penalty area. Is it possible that the attacker was able to maintain control of the baseball? At this point, the answer is yes.
Unkel concluded by saying: “It meets all of the DOGSO considerations so I would have wanted to see this as a penalty and then the VAR if not called on-field.”
In an interview with Canal+, Konate himself stated, “There was a VAR check.” I would have been shown a red card if there had been a push, as you mentioned would have occurred. According to what I’ve heard, there was no foul committed.
“It is true that I am very strong; however, I do not use power; rather, I simply put my arm over my head. We could have had a conversation about it if I had invested a great deal more power into it, but I was not very forceful about it.
