FourFourTwo compiled a list of the most despised people within the game of football in May of 2021. Although every football fan has their own main pantomime villain that they love to hate for a variety of reasons, this list represents the most despised individuals within the game.
The publication was quick to point out that the list did not consist of individuals who were “personally despised by the people of FourFourTwo.” Instead, the list focusses on individuals who “stir up opprobrium in the game.”
In addition, the publication acknowledges that even though some of the individuals on the list are not particularly well-liked by a large number of people, they still have a number of admirers at the same time.
Despite the fact that players and managers were the most frequently included, other notable individuals included presidents, owners, executives, and referees.
It was sufficient for Mike Dean to get the nod on a list that also included Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho for the way in which they have irritated people while being extremely successful. Mike Dean’s main character syndrome on the pitch and now in the Sky Sports studio was enough for him to get the nod.
In addition, there was a genuine obsession with football hardmen, which resulted in Dennis Wise, Joey Barton, Kevin Muscat, Andoni Goikoetxea, and Harald Schumacher all receiving a look-in for some of the shocking acts that they committed while playing football during their careers.
As a result of a number of scandals and controversies, Luis Suarez, John Terry, Diego Costa, and El Hadji Diouf are among the most disliked players to ever compete in the Premier League. It should come as no surprise that these four players are included in this list; however, Cristiano Ronaldo also has his fair share of detractors, and he is included as well.
Michel Platini and Sepp Blatter both make it into the top four for their roles in an alleged corruption scandal that occurred within UEFA and FIFA. This scandal resulted in the two individuals being banned for a period of six years.
