Despite the fact that he continues to struggle for first-team minutes under Ruben Amorim, one of the players who has been with Manchester United for the longest amount of time believes that “the time is right” to leave Old Trafford.
At Old Trafford, this has been a season nobody will ever forget. In addition to being eliminated from the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, they are currently ranked fourteenth in the Premier League table, having only managed to win nine of the possible twenty-seven matches they have played in.
Amorim has never been shy about admitting that they are having difficulties, and just before their match against Real Sociedad in the round of sixteen of the Europa League, he made a statement that was very revealing about the summer transfer window.
In a statement to the media, he admitted that players will be required to leave Old Trafford at the conclusion of this season as part of a squad overhaul. “We can talk about that [departures] at the end [of the season],” he explained to reporters.
There are a lot of games that we need to play. This is something that is abundantly clear, and I believe that this is not a challenging circumstance because everyone is aware that in football, there are times when you stay, and there are times when you have to move on.
Amorim continued by saying, “When you are honest with someone, they are able to stand it.” Even though it is challenging at first, they will eventually comprehend it. I am very forthright with my players, and they are already aware of the fact that there are times when they are required to move on at the conclusion of the season.
If this is taken into consideration, it would appear that Victor Lindelof, who plays centre back for United, could be one of the first players to leave the club this summer.
The Swede has only played two minutes in the league since Amorim took over as manager in November, and given that his contract is set to expire at the end of the season, it would appear that his time at Old Trafford is drawing to a close.
An outlet in Portuguese Record claim Lindelof is eager to return to Benfica, eight years after leaving the Primeira Liga club for Manchester United. He has expressed interest in doing so.
As the report continues, it is stated that the veteran defender travels to Portugal on a regular basis and believes that the time has come for him to make his long-awaited return to the Estadio da Luz club.
Benfica is reportedly placing Lindelof at the top of their list of potential targets for the summer, according to The Times, despite the fact that negotiations have not yet reached a more advanced stage.
Given the difficulties that Lisandro Martinez has been experiencing with injuries, United may decide to make a centre-back signing during the summer. What do you think about the future of Lindelof? Tell us about it in the comments section.
