6 Potential Replacements for Phil Parkinson as Pressure Mounts on Wrexham AFC

Wrexham have had a rough start to the 2026/27 Championship season, and for the first time since taking over the Red Dragons, manager Phil Parkinson is under significant pressure.

Wrexham let a one-goal lead slip away late on Tuesday evening, losing at home to West Bromwich Albion.

Kieffer Moore put the home side ahead just after the hour mark, but a late double from the Baggies, courtesy of Isaac Price and Aune Heggebo, secured the Black Country team all three points and sent Wrexham to just two wins in their first ten league games.

Parkinson is facing backlash for the first time since taking over at the Racecourse Ground in July 2021, and if the former Bradford City manager does not change the tide quickly, the walls may close in on him.

Parkinson has led the club from the National League to the Championship play-offs with great success, but even he is not immune to criticism. Football League World looks at six replacements the Welsh outfit should consider if they part ways with the 58-year-old sooner rather than later.

Steve Cooper

Steve Cooper is an expert on the Championship.

In each of the three seasons he has managed in the division (two with Swansea City and one with Nottingham Forest), he has never finished outside of the top six and has gone one better on each occasion, eventually leading Forest to the Premier League in 2022, where they have remained ever since.

He then had spells with Leicester City and Brondby, where he was much less successful, being dismissed from both, and he has been out of job since May after leaving the Danish club.

Wrexham need someone to steer them into the top eight, and Cooper’s superb track record suggests that a return to Wales could be the best option for all parties.

Rob Edwards

From one Welshman to another, it was widely assumed that when Rob Edwards left Middlesbrough for Wolverhampton Wanderers in November 2025, he would be seen as the club’s future, regardless of which division the Old Gold would be in the following year.

However, he was unexpectedly terminated over the summer and replaced by Cesar Peixoto, and he has been out of job ever since.

His best work occurred with Luton Town, where he led the Hatters from non-league to the Premier League, and he could repeat the same with Wrexham.

Steven Gerrard

A famous name in football, but Wrexham have the pulling power to make this happen, and Steven Gerrard may be an interesting contender.

The Liverpool icon began his managerial career with Rangers in 2018, leading the Glasgow club to an undefeated season in 2021, before moving on to Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq.

The 46-year-old is hoping to restart his management career, but he has been waiting for the ideal opportunity, and with Wrexham, it may happen soon.

Jon Dahl Tomasson

Between July 2022 and February 2024, Danish manager Jon Dahl Tomasson spent more than 18 months at Ewood Park with Blackburn Rovers, and his stay in Lancashire was anything but smooth.

Tomasson led Blackburn to within a goal difference of qualifying for the Championship play-offs during the 2022/23 season; however, the wheels came off shortly after, with the 50-year-old criticising and citing a lack of funding as the reason for his resignation.

After an unfortunate stint with the Sweden men’s national team, Tomasson has been out of work since; while he is unlikely to be Wrexham’s first choice, he is an intriguing possibility that they should investigate.

Scott Parker

Scott Parker joins an esteemed list of managers who have successfully guided three different teams to the top flight, with Fulham in the play-offs in 2020, Bournemouth in second place in 2022, and Burnley in 2025, conceding only 16 league goals throughout the campaign as the Clarets reached 100 points.

The former West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has yet to make an impact in the Premier League, and whether he is ready for another Championship promotion battle is unclear.

Parker, however, is among the top possible managers with a proven track record in the division.

Robbie Keane

Robbie Keane’s next managerial job appears to be in the Championship, and after winning titles in Israel with Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2023 and Hungary with Ferencvaros in 2025, the Irishman is in high demand in the managing world.

According to Alan Nixon’s Patreon, Preston North End considered a bid for Keane before settling on Graham Alexander, who might end up in the crosshairs of Wrexham.
