Wolves and Swansea City handed major boost involving Peixoto & Matos.

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Swansea City have received a significant managerial boost when their respective head coaches were linked with the vacant position at Liga Portugal club Sporting CP over the weekend.

Indeed, it has been widely reported that Sporting is close to reaching an agreement with Olympique Lyonnais manager Paulo Fonseca, increasing the chances of Cesar Peixoto and Vitor Matos sticking put.

Both clubs won convincingly on Saturday and are now well-positioned in the Championship’s early-season promotion race.

Wolves defeated Cardiff City 3-0 at Molineux, their second home win in a week, while Swansea beat Blackburn Rovers 4-0.

As a result, the aforementioned management news will provide the latest boost for both sets of supporters and their respective squads in WV1 and SA1.

Sporting CP closes in on Paulo Fonseca appointment following Cesar Peixoto and Vitor Matos conjecture.

It was reported on Saturday that the two Championship managers had caught the attention of Sporting, who had terminated Rui Borges’ contract after just under two years in charge.

Peixoto’s move to Molineux in the summer was his first management position outside of Portugal, after finishing sixth in the top league with Gil Vicente previous season, and Matos also had a brief spell with Maritimo after coaching at Liverpool and RB Salzburg.

Fonseca was also mentioned in the paper, and RMC Sport has now reported that the 53-year-old has said his farewell to his squad at the Groupama Stadium, with Lyon presently third in Ligue 1 after nine games.

Sporting is currently third in the Portuguese first flight, but they are already nine points behind leaders Porto, with Borges’ final match in charge a 2-0 away win over Casa Pia on Friday.

Swansea City will hope Vitor Matos’ departure chatter calms down after recent developments.

It is, of course, both a benefit and a disadvantage for clubs if their head coach is being pursued by clubs with a higher historical or present divisional rank.

Matos has won 22 of Swansea’s first 45 matches in all competitions since taking over a year ago, providing his team with a solid foundation to build on following a good finish to last season.

In addition to being linked with the Sporting vacancy, which Fonseca is expected to fill, the 38-year-old has recently emerged as a potential target for UEFA Conference League holders Crystal Palace, who have had a disappointing start to Pierre Sage’s reign and are currently ranked in the Premier League’s bottom three.

Wolves and Swansea City will hope for continued stability after managerial speculation

Just a few weeks ago, Peixoto came under fire from sections of the Wolves fanbase after a poor run of play following the international break, but his team has since taken 10 points from 12 games and is currently only one point behind the Swans after 13 games.

Given the depth of his and Matos’ squads, both clubs will look for stability in the short and long term to offer themselves the best opportunity of success.

With another international break approaching, they will have the opportunity to improve on their weekend wins against Portsmouth and Bristol City on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
