Whether playing in the English top division or on the European stage, clubs who travel to Stamford Bridge are prohibited from wearing white socks due to a little-known football regulation that is enforced by Premier League team Chelsea.
Every team that visits the west London-based stadium is compelled to switch to a contrasting colour instead of their own conventional colours (if they usually wear white socks), which might occasionally irritate the visiting team.
In order to adhere to the peculiar rules of the Blues, Real Madrid has worn both black and blue socks from their second and third strips. Known for dressing entirely in white, Los Blancos only donned black socks during the 1955–56 season.
When midfielder-turned-manager Tommy Docherty was still in command of the team during the 1964–1995 season, he chose to change Chelsea’s uniform from the usual black or blue socks to exclusively white ones.
Consequently, the unusual colour scheme created a distinctive and iconic look while enabling supporters inside the 40,341-seat stadium—one of the greatest in England’s primary division—to distinguish between the two teams. At the time, no other teams in the nation actually used that exact combination.
The supporters swiftly adopted the club’s new look after the decision was made, and the courageous choice proved to be well-liked by the club’s supporters, despite the disapproval of their rivals, who have established their own custom.

NSS Sports claims that the provision also pertains to broadcasting laws. No football league in the world permits two teams to use the same colour for any part of the outfield players’ uniforms, including the shirts, shorts, and socks.
This is to make sure that viewers, who are enjoying the warmth and comfort of their own homes, don’t become confused about whose team is which. Due to the need to comply with the regulations, kit producers are now compelled to produce kits in monochrome.
