Tommy Elphick has emerged as a candidate on Bristol City’s managerial shortlist.

Bristol City are looking for a new manager after Roy Hodgson’s time at the club ended with the season’s completion.

The Robins had a poor campaign since they were unable to sustain another promotion push.

The team competed in the play-offs a year ago under Liam Manning after finishing sixth in the Championship table, falling to Sheffield United in the semifinals.

However, following Manning’s resignation, Gerhard Struber took over as manager, and he was fired during the March international break.

Hodgson returned to Ashton Gate, having previously managed the club 44 years before, and led the squad to a 12th-place finish.

Bristol City will be hoping that the next head coach can get the club back into promotion contention next season, as they try to end their long wait for top-flight football.

Bristol City target Bournemouth appointment.

The Telegraph has claimed that Bristol City are looking to hire Tommy Elphick as their next head coach.

The 38-year-old is being considered following his stint as Andoni Iraola’s assistant at Bournemouth.

The former defender joined the Cherries in September 2021 and has worked under Gary O’Neil and Iraola.

He started out as a development squad coach before moving up to the main team when O’Neil took over as manager.

Bournemouth have had a solid campaign under the Spaniard, who is scheduled to leave at the conclusion of the season.

Elphick has never held a managerial position in his career, but he has established himself as a bright young coach as part of Iraola’s backroom team.

The Cherries have qualified for the Europa League this season and might yet qualify for the Champions League if Aston Villa win their Europa League final on Wednesday evening and finish fifth on the final day of the Premier League season.

Bournemouth sit sixth, three points ahead of Brighton in seventh, therefore a point or better against Nottingham Forest on Sunday could be enough to earn a Champions League spot, depending on other outcomes.

Bristol City just appointed James Ellis as sporting director, and he will be extensively involved in the selection of a new head coach.

Elphick is believed to have impressed the team, and he is now a top prospect to take over for next season.

Tommy Elphick’s appointment would be a hazardous choice for Bristol City.

Bournemouth has been fantastic this season, as evidenced by their 1-1 tie with Manchester City on Tuesday, which helped Arsenal capture the Premier League title.

Elphick has helped to change the Cherries in recent years, but it’s unclear whether he’s ready for the next level of management.

It would be an unusual choice, but it could be a wise one if he can duplicate the type of game Bournemouth played under Iraola at Bristol City.

It would be a dangerous decision for Ellis to hire a head coach with no managing experience right away, but if it succeeds, it may pay off handsomely.
