After a demanding first six weeks of the season, the majority of Championship teams are enjoying a much-needed break as the international break approaches.

However, Bolton Wanderers’ three-week layoff between their most recent match and their next one on October 10th hasn’t been ideal, considering Steven Schumacher’s team was playing well going into the break.

In fact, the Trotters were starting to feel the full force of the Championship in their first year back after seven away games after four straight losses. However, a victory at home against Cardiff City, another recently promoted team, and their first road victory this season at Norwich City have suddenly given the first eight games some optimism.

With three wins from eight games, Bolton is now ranked 15th. The one thing that all of those wins have in common is that Thierry Gale has scored in each of them.

After a respectable but quiet debut season at Bolton Wanderers, Thierry Gale’s current form is surprising.

Gale, who joined Bolton last summer from Austrian team Rapid Vienna for BDS $1.2 million, or about £445,000, is in his second season there.

The 24-year-old struggled at Vienna after moving there in 2023 and reportedly becoming the most expensive player from Barbados. He only participated in nine senior games across all competitions due to an ACL injury that dogged his stay there.

Significantly, considering his two prior seasons, he maintained a respectable level of fitness at Bolton last season. However, it might be argued that this was made possible by Steven Schumacher and his coaching staff’s effective load management.

Out of his 36 League games, Gale only started 20. He only made one appearance the previous year, and he never bowled five times in a row. In less than 1,800 minutes of play, he somehow managed to record five goals and four assists.

Thierry Gale was occasionally able to play a supporting role due to Bolton Wanderers’ attacking depth last season.

However, Gale never had to start every week during his first season at Bolton since Steven Schumacher had an abundance of wide-area attacking depth.

Last year, the Trotters’ promotion effort was a masterful use of the loan market. Amario Cozier-Duberry was among the finest players in the entire division, although Rob Apter also contributed throughout the season, as did Ibrahim Cissoko and Corey Blackett-Taylor.

Gale really came off the bench in the second leg of Bolton’s play-off semifinal victory over Bradford City after being an unused replacement in the first game. He was given a start in the victory over Stockport County at Wembley.

The 24-year-old was therefore a member of an excellent core of players in the wide areas last season. However, he’s been required to play a more prominent role this season, and he’s doing well thus far.

After Bolton Wanderers’ best wingers departed this summer, Thierry Gale is taking over.

The main concern among Bolton supporters this summer was who would replace Cozier-Duberry’s output. It was clear from the beginning of the transfer window that, even though Bolton had been promoted, he would be loaned out to a team that aspired to promotion if the Championship turned out to be his destination.

Gale was the only remaining winger from the Trotters’ roster from the previous season, but they did strengthen their wide areas this summer. Many weren’t expecting him to step up in the manner that he has, as he was more of an impact player than a regular starter the previous season.

Early on, the 24-year-old has shown that he is capable of becoming both a very skilled Championship winger and a merciless goal scorer. This season, the wideman has scored three goals from just nine shots, for a total of 0.49 anticipated goals.

Other than that, though, he has been Steven Schumacher’s team’s primary player responsible for moving the ball up the field. He is in the top 10 in the Championship for average metres made per advancing carry, and his 12 successful dribbles place him in the top 6% of wingers in the league.

Whether it was the late victory against Cardiff, the second in the first-day 2-1 victory over Preston North End, or the first equaliser in Sunday’s thrilling 4-3 victory at Carrow Road, his efforts have contributed to Bolton’s three victories this season.

After a great start, Thierry Gale will find it difficult to maintain consistency.

Gale has had a great start to the Championship, but maintaining this level of consistency after the international break will be difficult for the 24-year-old.

Bolton is still predicted to be struggling at the bottom of the division despite winning their last two games. Every victory will be crucial, and if Gale can maintain his position as Steven Schumacher’s team’s primary offensive threat, he will be able to assist them secure the victories required for survival.

Although there are still some questions about whether the Barbados international can continue to produce at this level, they are beginning to fade as the weeks have passed.

Even if Gale isn’t Cozier-Duberry, he’s already shown to be just as crucial to Bolton this season. Those at the Toughsheet might have a new hero out wide if he can maintain this level of play and help the Championship enjoy a season of solidification.
