Police Provide Update Following ‘Alarming’ Fan Incident at Middlesbrough vs Wolves Match

A 20-year-old football fan has been charged with a public order violation after displaying a potentially “alarming and distressing” message on a phone during Middlesbrough’s Championship match against Wolves.

Borough won 1-0 over the relegated side at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday, but some of the post-game attention was focused to a message shown on a cell phone.

An image uploaded on social media appeared to show a guy holding up a phone with the words “police killed your own,” and Cleveland Police later confirmed that an enquiry had been opened, before a 20-year-old Walsall man was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence.

The police have subsequently verified that the individual has been charged, and Wolves have also commented on the event.

Cleveland Police deliver a statement following the Middlesbrough versus Wolves incident.

Cleveland Police reported that a 20-year-old guy was arrested after footage from Saturday’s Championship game spread on social media.

PC Chris Hilton stated: “We began the investigation into this incident immediately after we were made aware of this footage following the match.”

Officers described the actions captured on video as possibly “alarming and distressing” as they collaborated with West Midlands Police to locate a suspect.

The investigation continued until the 20-year-old was identified as Bradley Aston, who has been charged with a public order crime under Section 4A of the Public Order Act.

He was remanded in custody and was scheduled to appear in court in Wolverhampton on October 13, according to reports on Monday.

The message seems to reference the deadly A66 crash.

The phone message displayed on Saturday is thought to have addressed the fatal crash on the A66 on August 22, which claimed the lives of two Cleveland Police officers and five young men.

PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough were killed after their marked police vehicle struck head-on with a Volkswagen Passat going the wrong way down the dual carriageway.

The tragedy created widespread pain in the surrounding community, making Saturday’s occurrence especially sensitive.

Along with the police updates, Wolves have also published their own statement.

In the aftermath, Wolves have stated that they will continue to assist authorities.

According to the BBC, a club representative stated that they will assist with investigations and denounce any suspected misconduct.Following an arrest by the competent authorities, Wolves will continue to assist with investigations as needed. The club condemns any such behaviour and will deal with people who violate our Acceptable Behaviour Policy through the proper disciplinary process.”

The same BBC article states that Middlesbrough has been contacted for comment.

The match eventually resulted in a 1-0 victory for the Teessiders on the pitch, but the investigation and resulting charge have diverted focus away from what was a fantastic day for Kim Hellberg’s team.
