One of the contestants who appeared on the BBC quiz show Pointless has gained widespread attention after providing an answer that was completely unexpected to a question that was related to the World Cup.
Alexander Armstrong, the host, was joined by Liza Tarbuck, the co-host, for the quiz that took place on Thursday afternoon. The objective of the quiz was for the contestants to come up with answers that no one else could think of.
In the seventh episode of this season’s series, Armstrong began by discussing the topic of “World Cup football,” and more specifically, national teams that have participated in multiple FIFA Men’s World Cups.
Since the first competition took place in 1930, Tarbuck explained that they were looking for teams that had participated in at least two of the competitions since then.
She concluded by saying: “Where a country has changed its name, or the FIFA website recognises that present day country is now its successor as it were, we will accept either name as one answer.”
While Lyn from Weston-super-Mare was on his mission to score as few points as possible, the camera panned towards him a few moments later. However, despite his best efforts, he ended up scoring the dreaded 100 points, which was a significant distance from the target.
Following a brief pause, Lyn responded, “Charlton Athletic,” which elicited a response from Armstrong that might be described as slightly perplexed.
A brief remark was made by Tarbuck in response to the answer, and he stated, “There is nothing else to say other than national teams, obviously.” In the event that you are not a fan of football and it does not come to your mind in a natural way, then it is absolutely acceptable. This is still a good place for you to be.”
A total of eleven national teams, including Bolivia, Ecuador, Egypt, Honduras, New Zealand, North Korea, Northern Ireland, Slovenia, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, and El Salvador, were deemed to be ineffective answers.
It is unfortunate that Charlton, a club from south-east London that is currently in fifth place in the League One table, did not participate in the match.
After a video was uploaded to X, which was formerly known as Twitter, the following is how fans on social media responded to the scenes.
Someone told me, “I saw this the night before.” Someone else made the following observation: “If he answers all football questions with ‘Charlton Athletic,’ he will bound to get one right eventually.” He was howling with laughter for a few minutes after he said that.
A third individual commented: “I do actually feel for the guy, on the pressure of live TV you can make mistakes and national sides does sound a bit more ambiguous than ‘international sides'” .
According to the fourth individual, “I mean, if someone were to ask me a question about Bowls, I wouldn’t have a clue whatsoever.” I would not answer “West Ham” if it contained the word “International,” however, because it would be inappropriate.
In addition, a fifth individual declared, “The People’s Democratic Athletic Republic of Charlton.”
