Mikey Johnston has sent a five-word message to Alex Mowatt following his departure from West Brom to join Derby County.

Mikey Johnston, a winger for West Bromwich Albion, is one of the names responding to Alex Mowatt’s move from The Hawthorns to Derby County, a divisional foe.

Nevertheless, the two teams had quite different starts to their Championship campaigns. West Brom overcame Norwich City 2-1 at Carrow Road, including a contentious opening goal from Aune Heggebo, by putting last season’s problems away from B71 behind them.

Derby, however, has had a mixed start to August. On the field, John Eustace’s team has lost back-to-back 2-1 games in the EFL Cup and then the second division to Lincoln City and Charlton Athletic, while Saudi Arabian boxing tycoon Turki Alalshikh withdrew from a takeover bid that had already been approved by the EFL and the Independent Football Regulator.

Prior to the start of the season, the Rams were widely favoured to finish in the top eight, especially if Alalshikh’s funding allowed for a vigorous recruitment campaign until the 11 PM deadline on September 1.

Mowatt, who signed a two-year contract in DE24 after the two Midlands teams reached an undisclosed agreement, is only the fifth player to join Pride Park thus far this transfer window.

Derby and West Brom supporters have, of course, had differing opinions about the deal, but the Doncaster native has undoubtedly left B71 with many well-wishes from his now-former colleagues.

As Alex Mowatt completes the Derby County, West Brom transfer, Mikey Johnston responds.

Mowatt had played for Albion for the previous five years. In 2021, he followed his old Barnsley manager, Valerien Ismael, to The Hawthorns, but the Frenchman was unable to duplicate his previous success at Oakwell in the West Midlands.

Since then, the former Leeds United player has established himself as a staple in the team under several different managers. Towards the close of the last campaign, he put up some crucial performances to secure survival under James Morrison.

Before making his Derby debut with a 36-minute cameo on Saturday, Mowatt finished his final season in B71 with one Championship goal and four assists, helping to raise his overall Albion record to 14 goals and 13 assists in 170 appearances across all competitions.

The midfield player wrote, “I would like to thank everyone involved at @WBA for everything over the last 5 years,” in an Instagram post announcing his resignation. I’ve truly relished every second and created lifelong memories despite all the highs and lows.He continued, “I’ve met some incredible people along the way—teammates, employees, and people behind the scenes who have made my time at the club so special.”I want to thank all of the fans for their incredible support during my time here. I wish @wba the best of luck in the future; what a club! “Thank you, baggies.”

Johnston was one of many who responded, saying, “All the best my boy.”

Alex Mowatt’s exit follows a midfield reorganisation at West Brom

Mowatt’s departure was understandably an emotional farewell, but it also follows Morrison’s significant midfield reorganisation and the ongoing trend of long-serving players leaving for fresh opportunities.

Felix Horn Myhre, one of West Brom’s two most recent recruits, is already making an impression in the middle of the field. Rabby Nzingoula’s transfer from RC Strasbourg was also confirmed just hours after Football League World ended the team’s interest in the highly regarded 20-year-old.

At Carrow Road on Saturday, the latter replaced the Norwegian after 68 minutes, and there will be a lot of hope that one or both of them can connect with Ousmane Diakite.

Derby County may benefit much from Alex Mowatt’s experience.

Eustace has frequently hired players with a lot of Championship experience throughout his tenure as manager, and Mowatt is someone who offers both that and exceptional technical skill.

As a result, when he recovers from an achilles injury, the 31-year-old’s service in open play and dead-ball situations could result in a plethora of goals from players like Carlton Morris and USMNT international Patrick Agyemang.
