Michael Oliver to referee in Premier League this weekend despite death threats after Arsenal red card

The referee ejected Myles Lewis-Skelly, leading to a police investigation.

Michael Oliver is scheduled to officiate in the Premier League this weekend, notwithstanding receiving death threats following the red card fiasco at Molineux last Saturday.

Oliver issued a straight red card to Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly during the Gunners’ 1-0 triumph against Wolves, a judgement validated by VAR Darren England but widely condemned by fans and analysts.

Threats sent at Oliver in the aftermath have led to a police inquiry, and the referee organisation PGMOL released a public statement on Sunday evening condemning the abuse.

“No official should endure any form of abuse, particularly the reprehensible assaults directed at Michael and his family in the past 24 hours,” it stated.

There were proposals that Oliver, regarded as one of the nation’s premier officials, could be removed from the line of fire this weekend.

It has already been confirmed that he will officiate the relegation match between Ipswich and Southampton at Portman Road, as well as the rescheduled high-profile Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton next week.

England, who officiated with VAR at Wolves, resumes his duties as the on-field referee for Liverpool’s match against the formidable Bournemouth. Peter Bankes has been designated to officiate the match between Arsenal and Manchester City on Sunday.
