In the first half of their match at Wembley against Manchester City, Manchester United created amazing FA Cup final history.
Against a City team that won their fourth straight Premier League title last weekend, United entered the FA Cup final at Wembley as the underdog.
However, Erik ten Hag’s team sprinted to a 2-0 lead at the half thanks to goals from academy graduates Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.
While Garnacho’s goal put his team ahead after a rare defensive blunder by City, Mainoo’s goal came after an incredible team move.
Josko Gvardiol attempted to head the ball back to the advancing goalkeeper Stefan Ortega following a long ball over the top of the defence.
He was only able to head the ball over the German goalkeeper, though, as Garnacho raced by to gather up the fragments and slot them into an empty net.
The Argentinean made history by becoming the first teenage player to score for Manchester United in an FA Cup since 2004’s Cristiano Ronaldo.
The record for the most goals scored by a United legend in a 4-0 victory over Millwall in the 2004 final stood for an incredible two decades.
But before Mainoo’s goal, Garnacho took over as the new owner of that specific piece of history—for about fifteen minutes.
Thanks to Mainoo’s goal, United made a special moment in FA Cup final history.
Mainoo is the youngest goal scorer for United since John Sissons of West Ham in 1964, and the team is the first to have two teenagers score in an FA Cup final.
