When Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo scored during their 2-2 draw at Old Trafford, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp gave an explanation for his enraged tirade from the sidelines. Following goals from Luis Diaz and Bruno Fernandes, the 18-year-old wonderkid gave the home team the lead. However, Mohamed Salah equalized from the penalty spot, and the Reds were unable to hold onto their top spot in the Premier League standings.

Despite dominating the first half, which saw Diaz break free at a corner to prod past Andre Onana at the back post to give Klopp’s team the lead, Liverpool was unable to capitalize on several opportunities to put the game out of reach.

After that, Fernandes exacted revenge on Liverpool by lobbing Caoimhin Kelleher from 45 yards out to equalize, and Mainoo easily went through midfield before curling a shot past the Reds’ keeper.

After laying the ball off to Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the left and getting it back, he picked up the ball just inside the visitors’ half and dribbled towards the penalty area before launching a spectacular strike into the top corner.

In response to a question from Sky Sports regarding his outburst following Mainoo’s goal, Klopp said, “I’m not angry with the boys at all but in the game I cannot just let things happen.” Klopp was anything but happy on the touchline, yelling angrily at his players. There is only one player between the lines, and I’m not sure which player is too deep, but we are too deep.

It is perfectly acceptable for my manager to yell like that on the field, but if I were a player, I wouldn’t be happy with that. It’s things you observe in real time as midfield and defense interact.”

Klopp believed Liverpool should have defeated United, particularly in the first half-hour when they denied their opponents a single opportunity to score. However, I was happy to pick up a point and didn’t see it as a two-point loss in the race for the title.

It’s obvious that we ought to have won the game,” he continued. “In the first half, we ought to have scored more goals. There are no shots in the first half, and the score of 1-0 is as low as it gets. Excellent work, Bruno. The stadium then approaches, and it took us a few minutes to calm down before they scored another thunderous goal. Before and after their goal, we had numerous opportunities.

“In my opinion, we now have a stronger point than we did earlier. That’s the way it is; they put in an extra shift. That will come up again when we play Everton. Well-deserved equalizer.”
