West Brom are ramping up their pre-season preparations as the 2026-27 Championship season approaches.

After defeating League One club Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 at St George’s Park, James Morrison’s team made it two wins from two in Portugal, defeating fellow third-tier side Bromley 4-1 in Albufeira.

In terms of summer transfer activity, the Baggies got off to a rapid start after barely keeping their Championship position.

The Baggies began their splurge with the signing of Falkirk attacker Barney Stewart, followed by the announcement of the arrival of Liverpool defender Carter Pinnington, but the former Reds man will initially be placed in Albion’s U21 setup for development.

Albion’s third and most recent arrival is intriguing Chelsea youngster Jimmy-Jay Morgan, who has impressed in pre-season and has scored in both of the club’s triumphs.

The England U20 international, like Stewart, has signed a four-year contract at The Hawthorns, with Albion paying an initial cost of £1.3 million, with add-ons potentially worth up to £4 million.

However, Albion’s transfer activity has been worryingly quiet for a number of weeks, with the Black Country outfit still in need of a lot more quality additions to improve each department, with controlling shareholder Shilen Patel echoing that sentiment by confirming in an open letter to supporters that their business is far from finished.

There are still vacancies to fill after eight players left. Following the end of last season, the Hawthorns have completed the signing of winger Karlan Grant, who has returned to his boyhood club Charlton Athletic.

Meanwhile, forward Josh Maja might make it nine, with the Nigerian international yet to commit his future and poised to leave The Hawthorns on a free transfer.

With so many exits to deal with, Baggies manager Morrison has revealed the areas Albion will need to strengthen next as the new season approaches.

James Morrison underlines the need for wingers following Karlan Grant’s departure.

According to Lewis Cox of the Express & Star, West Brom manager James Morrison has revealed that Albion’s next move in the summer transfer window will be to bring in new wingers, as the club is currently very short following the departures of Karlan Grant and Jed Wallace.

However, Morrison added that he was ‘satisfied’ that the club had adequately bolstered that specific department, with Albion’s season beginning with a Carabao Cup trip to Rotherham United in three weeks.

Morrison remarked, “Obviously, we need to get some wingers in.

We don’t have one at the moment. But there’s a lot of work being done behind the scenes. So I’m pretty comfortable.

“We’re all working together to bring in the right players at the appropriate moment. We need to be a little bit wise and patient.”

West Brom must resolve the winger dilemma immediately.

Albion presently has only one recognised winger in Mikey Johnston, who is recovering from an ankle injury sustained at the conclusion of last season, while Isaac Price can play on the opposite flank but is better suited to centre positions.

If Morrison is to stick with his 4-4-2 formation that worked so well during his interim spell, the Baggies will need to bring in wide players with plenty of pace and trickery, as well as the ability to deliver quality balls into the box, to give Albion an extra edge and enough ammunition to compete for promotion.

Not to mention that the club will have to work extremely hard to ensure that those wingers get enough minutes in pre-season before the Championship season begins, with all new additions needing time to adjust to Morrison’s methods and way of working before being thrown into the deep end.

With little over three weeks until their League Cup match, Albion must crank up their transfer preparations and address the winger dilemma, as the club cannot afford to have such a stretched attack when the 2026-27 second-tier season needs to get off to a good start.
