The recent loss that Manchester United suffered at home to Crystal Palace has provided Ruben Amorim with a great deal of food for thought once more, following yet another shocking performance at Old Trafford.
As if the loss by a score of 0-2 wasn’t enough, Amorim also suffered the loss of one of his most important players due to a knee injury that appears to be enough to prevent him from playing for the rest of the season.
The centre back With what has now been determined to be damage to the cruciate ligament in his right knee, Lisandro Martinez was taken out of the game because of his injury.
At the eleventh hour, United made the decision not to enter the transfer market in order to find a replacement for the Argentine player. Amorim is anticipated to find a suitable replacement for him among the members of the current roster.
According to The Express, former Scotland international Ally McCoist has suggested that Diogo Dalot could be the solution to the problem of losing Martinez. Amorim could use the Portuguese player in the role of left-sided centre back as part of the back three.
The Scot is of the opinion that Dalot will be the one to fill Martinez’s shoes because Luke Shaw will continue to be absent from the team.
Amorim had anticipated that Shaw would provide him with an additional option for the second half of the season; however, Shaw has, unbelievably, suffered yet another injury setback just a few days after returning to first-team training.
Diogo Dalot seems to be the most obvious candidate. What I mean is that I have no idea what is going on with Luke Shaw now. That’s yet another example.
In the event that he intends to continue playing that three at the back, Dalot is the most obvious candidate to do so. If they are able to get Shaw fit, I am aware that he has previously operated as a centre back. “I have no idea how far away he is,” he said in an interview with Express Sport.
As McCoist continued, he stated that he believes Dalot’s best position is on either side of a back four. However, due to Amorim’s insistence on sticking with his back three, McCoist believes that the 25-year-old is the right man for the job.
Because of the way he plays that back three, it is a little bit of a shame that he is no longer playing. In my opinion, Dalot’s wide position in the back four has been one of the areas of strength and one of the areas of improvement.
According to him, “It is comfortable for him to get up and down, and you would obviously take that away from him if he moved to centre-back,” but he also stated that he believes that this is the most obvious choice.
Given the recent form of the World Cup winner, Martinez, who was getting back to his best after a slow start to the campaign, Martinez’s injury was nothing if not ill-timed by any stretch of the imagination.
On the other hand, considering that United’s January acquisitions were in defensive positions, Amorim is in a relatively good position to be able to find adequate cover for his star player who is absent.
Depending on the circumstances, either Noussair Mazraoui or Dalot will be able to play the position of centre back thanks to the new signing of Patrick Dorgu. Leny Yoro may find himself in a position to play for the first team for an extended period of time.
