Ian Poveda, a one-time wing prodigy who made his senior football debut with Leeds United, has had a mixed career so far, despite being projected for great success.

The Southwark-born two-cap Colombia international attended Arsenal, Chelsea, and even Barcelona during his academy days before joining Manchester City, where he cemented his reputation as one of the best youth players of his generation.

Poveda subsequently moved across the Pennines to join Leeds United, where he helped the Whites win promotion from the Championship and went on to make 14 Premier League appearances under Marcelo Bielsa as Leeds finished ninth.

However, opportunities were restricted, particularly after the Argentine’s stunning departure the following year, and the highly-rated winger went on to have a series of mixed loan experiences in the second division with Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool, and Sheffield Wednesday.

Poveda departed Leeds for nothing in the summer of 2024 to join Sunderland, and while the Black Cats won promotion through the play-offs, the ex-Man City academy star made few contributions.

He failed to start, score, or assist in any of his six league outings on Wearside, which lasted only 81 minutes, and Regis Le Bris removed him from the first-team squad due to disciplinary difficulties.

Poveda’s final appearance, as luck would have it, was in Sunderland’s dramatic 2-1 defeat at Leeds little over a year ago, and after falling significantly out of favour at the Stadium of Light, the Colombian forward has now moved on to a surprise new club to put an end to his north-east nightmare.

That’s because it has been revealed that Poveda has left Sunderland on a permanent basis to join Internacional de Bogota of Colombia’s top division, a decision that may be indicative of the former England youth international’s precipitous fall from favor.

Poveda’s new side is now at the top of the table after nine games, and the tricky wide-man will be hoping to boost their title-winning aspirations in the coming weeks and months.

It’s Poveda’s first senior move outside of England, and many anticipated him to return to the EFL with a Championship or League One club.

Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see how the ex-prodigy performs in Colombia at a time when he sorely needs to restart his career, and given his two previous caps for the South American country, the transfer surely makes sense on a personal level.

Sheffield Wednesday may have seen the best of the fleet-footed attacker, who scored zero goals and assisted once in ten games on loan in the second half of the 2023/24 season, but he did provide signs of excitement and buzz during better times for the Owls under Danny Rohl as they secured a dramatic survival.

Injuries have also hampered Poveda’s progress, most notably delaying a loan term at Blackburn that had initially provided significant encouragement, but he’s really lost his way in recent times and had a legitimate opportunity to prove his worth at Sunderland before falling out of favour.

His career is far from over, and Leeds and Wednesday fans, in particular, may be hoping that Poveda can buckle down and resume enjoying his football in the Colombian city.
