EFL club chairman responds to player’s social media statement following red card

Acun Ilicali, Hull City’s owner, took to social media following John Lundstram’s apology to supporters on Saturday.

The midfielder issued a statement after being sent off in the Tigers’ defeat against Sheffield United.

Sergej Jakirovic’s side lost 2-1 at Bramall Lane after giving up a lead late on.

Hull had taken the lead through Oli McBurnie, looking to cement their hold on a Championship play-off spot.

However, Lundstram was booked twice in nine minutes of the second half, earning him a red card against his previous team.

With five minutes remaining, the Blades leveled through Gustavo Hamer, who converted a penalty granted by referee John Brooks.

Danny Ings sealed all three points for the home team barely three minutes later.

Lundstram apologized to fans.

Following the game, Lundstram rushed to social media to apologize to Hull fans.

He also responded to the greeting he received from Sheffield United supporters.

Lundstram posted on his Instagram account, “I never ever do this, but I’m sorry to the Hull fans today; fine margins decide games, and I believe I cost us today.” “I apologize.””I was hurt by the Blades fans’ hostility today and don’t understand why.”I adore the club, gave everything I had for it, and was a member of perhaps the greatest Sheffield United team in history.

“I left because I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to change mine and my family’s lives.”I simply wanted to apologize to the Hull fans and say that I adore Sheffield United and will always have a special place in my heart.

Lundstram will now be suspended for Hull’s home game against Birmingham this Saturday.

Hull chairman reacts.

However, he may face Ilicali’s wrath after the Tigers chairman responded on social media.

The Turkish billionaire criticized the refereeing decisions and appeared to mock Lundstram for using the word ‘hull’ instead of ‘hull’ in his statement.

Ilicali commented on X: “Dear Lunny, We are still in pain from the three points that were stolen from us today.

“We believe that the most important thing today that we need to talk about is losing three points by terrible referee decisions.”During a disappointing afternoon, I expected your comments to focus on the injustice on the pitch rather than your disappointment with your old club’s fans.We are a large family with one dream. The team, coach, and fans are all focused on reaching the playoffs.I hope the sincere love and support of our Hull City (with capital H) fans helps you feel better in the future.”

Lundstram played four years with Sheffield United before joining Rangers on a free transfer in 2021.

During his stint with the Blades, he made 120 games and helped the team achieve promotion to the Premier League.

The 32-year-old is presently on loan at Hull from Turkish club Trabzonspor, where he hopes to return to the top division for the first time in nine years.

Following Saturday’s defeat, the Tigers are sixth in the Championship, four points ahead of seventh-place Wrexham with four games remaining.
