Tonda Eckert, Southampton’s head coach, has confessed that the Football Association’s forthcoming verdict on the Spygate incident is still on his mind, but he says that his primary emphasis remains on preparing the club for the new season.
The German coach is currently awaiting the result after being accused with misconduct by the FA for authorising the observation of rival Championship training sessions last season. More than a week has passed since the governing body verified the charge, leaving it unclear what, if any, punishment will follow.
The dispute has already had serious ramifications for Southampton. In May, the team was kicked out of the Championship play-offs after admitting that staff members had witnessed training sessions involving three rival clubs during the season. The FA then claimed that Eckert acted unlawfully and brought the game into disrepute, sparking disciplinary action against the 33-year-old manager.
Although Southampton owner Dragan Solak publicly supported his head coach in June, stating that he had no intention of removing him, Eckert’s future remained unknown. If the FA decides to impose a lengthy suspension, the situation may become even more complex for both the club and its manager.
Speaking freely about the ongoing investigation, Eckert admitted that the subject has inevitably remained on his mind while emphasising that he has tried not to let it distract him from his daily responsibilities.
He confessed that it would be dishonest to suggest that the topic never crosses his thoughts, explaining that everyone involved with the club is aware of the situation and is waiting for the final decision. However, he highlighted that his love of football has helped him stay focused despite the uncertainties.
According to Eckert, the responsibilities of preseason training allow little time to reflect on situations beyond his control. With training sessions to plan, tactical tasks to complete, and transfer activities necessitating ongoing attention, he believes there is always another assignment that need immediate attention.
Rather than allowing the pending verdict to dominate his mind, the Southampton manager stated that he likes to focus on what is right in front of him every day. He believes that by sticking to that mindset, he and the players have been able to continue positively preparing for the challenges ahead.
While recognising that everyone at the club will be relieved when the FA makes its verdict, Eckert argued there is little point in worrying about a conclusion that is unknown. Until the governing body issues its decision, he intends to continue working as usual while assuring his players are completely prepared for the upcoming season.
The Southampton squad is presently conducting a pre-season training camp in Germany, where owner Dragan Solak has joined the players and coaching staff. His inclusion in the team has been interpreted as another indication of the club’s sustained support for Eckert while disciplinary proceedings are ongoing.
Several friendlies have already been scheduled in preparation for the new season. During their trip to Germany, Southampton faced Eastleigh and Eintracht Braunschweig, as well as a behind-closed-doors match against SC Paderborn.
The Saints will finish their preseason schedule with another friendly against Preussen Munster before returning to England. Their competitive season will begin shortly thereafter, when they face Colchester in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
The focus will then soon shift to the Championship, with Southampton starting their league campaign away to Watford one week later.
Despite the uncertainties surrounding the FA probe, Eckert is totally committed to taking Southampton back to the Premier League on their first attempt. He believes that last season’s achievements, notably the team’s strong performances in the FA Cup, have given the squad important confidence as they prepare for the new season.
The manager made it plain that Southampton’s primary goal is automatic promotion, and he believes everyone at the club understands the level of ambition they are aiming for. While acknowledging the Championship’s strength, Eckert said his teammates do not fear the task.
He noted that each Championship season presents its unique set of challenges, with the hard fixture schedule ensuring that every club faces setbacks along the way. Maintaining consistency over such a long season will be critical if Southampton are to meet their goals.
Eckert also noted that some strong clubs have slid into the Championship, making promotion an even more difficult task. Nonetheless, he feels Southampton should focus on their own performance rather than being distracted by the quality of their opponents.
Reflecting on last season, the head coach claimed that Southampton had already proved their capacity to compete well against top-tier opponents. Although cup matches present different circumstances than league football, he believes the squad’s performances demonstrated the quality required to compete at the top of the division.
Eckert’s objective is to ensure Southampton regains that same level of performance as soon as feasible once the competitive season begins. Building momentum in the early weeks could be critical in what figures to be another hotly contested Championship season.
While the ambiguity around the FA’s decision continues to cloud Southampton’s preparations, Eckert is determined not to let it disrupt the club’s plans. Instead, he is focused on improving the squad, guiding his players through pre-season, and preparing them to compete for automatic promotion.
