David Bruce provides a new transfer update for Sheffield Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday have been working relentlessly in the background in preparation for the summer transfer window, which opens on June 15.

While David Storch is unable to pursue fresh player signings, he has been appointing new board members, most recently David Bruce as Chief Executive Officer.

Bruce was unveiled at Hillsborough with the new ownership group on the final day, although his hiring was not officially confirmed until Monday evening.

The new CEO departed Sunderland to work with Wednesday. At the Stadium of Light, he served as Chief Business Officer, overseeing the club’s off-field triumphs that aided Regis Le Bris’ side’s return to the Premier League, where they successfully avoided relegation in their first season back.

David Bruce feels Sheffield Wednesday must be “aggressive and active” when the summer transfer window opens on June 15. Sheffield Wednesday has been working relentlessly in the background to create the groundwork for an early attack on the market.

Understandably, there is a lot of anticipation for what Bruce can do at Hillsborough, as evidenced by his clear stance toward upgrading the playing team, which he expressed in his first interview with the club.

This time last summer, the Owls’ squad was devastated when players left due to late wage payments and former owner Dejphon Chansiri’s inability to replace them. As a result, the Championship set a new low in points and saw a slew of emergency loan players who have since returned to their original clubs.

The retained list contained only 18 senior contracted players, not including those who had been offered new contracts. Despite accepting new contracts, Bruce acknowledges the need for further improvements to prepare the squad for League One in August.”The football side is hugely, hugely important,” Bruce told the Sheffield Star. “We have some work to do there with Henrik and the team. On Saturday, we announced our retained list. We have some job in the market to complete. We have emerging lists. We aim to bring new playing styles to League One and have a stable of returning players. However, we need to be proactive in the market and expect to do so as soon as the window opens. We’ve received some interest in our players, as one would expect. “We have a mix of talented young players and experienced players who may not want to join us in League One. We must be mindful of this.”So we’re going to be really engaged in football, and hopefully there will be a lot of good news to come out of that sector of our business as well.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s next significant signing will be a new sporting director, according to David Bruce.

Finally, for the club to be aggressive in their pursuit of the players who will fit an appealing style next season, they must have a new sporting director in place.

Stockport County CEO Simon Wilson has been widely tipped for the position, having left Edgeley Park in the summer after seven years with the Hatters, during which time they progressed from the National League North to, depending on the outcome of Sunday’s League One play-off final, the Championship.

While not directly addressing Wilson, David Bruce expressed his confidence about the efforts being made to bring the dynamic sporting director to Hillsborough.

“We’re working really hard on our preferred candidate,” he said. “There is still some work to be done, but we have identified a candidate who we believe will be a great fit for the football club.

“He’s got great experience and track record in the game, someone who I think I can work wonderfully well with, who I can partner wonderfully well with, as well as the manager and everyone over at the training ground.”So we are optimistic. Hopefully, in the coming weeks, we’ll get some good news as well.”

The fact that Stockport’s season has yet to end will most likely be a hurdle to getting Wilson in as quickly as Wednesday would like, but there is still enthusiasm while terms are worked out.

Optimism and hope haven’t been synonymous with Sheffield Wednesday for a long time, but with the Owls seemingly aware of where they need to improve and the type of player they want to recruit as they return to the third tier, things are looking up.

Time will tell whether it results in instant promotion back to the Championship, but even if not, there will undoubtedly be more to celebrate next season than in 2025/26.
