Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United, called Jonny Evans “Zidane” for his outstanding Premier League defensive performance against Everton.
For the Red Devils, the center back has started the last two league games. In the Manchester derby, he was outstanding, winning all 100 of his ground battles.
Manchester City was able to find the winner thanks to his substitution in the second half.
With yet another strong performance against the Toffees, the 36-year-old turned back the clock. He showed remarkable control at the back, completing 88% of his passes.
In addition, he stopped four shots on goal and made four clearances. Fernandes praised Evans as Jonny “Zidane” Evans in an Instagram post he made following the game.
Evans first participated in United’s preseason workouts in order to improve his fitness, but the team was ultimately persuaded to grant him a temporary contract for the upcoming season.
Some fans expressed disapproval of the decision. With several outstanding performances this season, the Northern Irishman has returned the favor.
At the end of June, his current contract expires. If the hierarchy decides to keep him on the squad for an additional year, we won’t be shocked.
This summer, United will undoubtedly spend big money on a star central defender, but Evans’ wealth of experience and leadership make him a valuable substitute.
At approximately £65,000 per week, he is currently among the lowest paid, so paying him to stay for another season won’t have an effect on the wage budget.
