Callum O’Hare has become a household name in the Championship in recent seasons, particularly when at Coventry City and Sheffield United.

However, in his most recent career move, the 28-year-old has chosen to be a part of the enormous project that Wrexham are currently building in North Wales.

The Red Dragons are hopeful that the significant investment made by American and Canadian actors Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds would help them achieve the Premier League for the first time in their existence.

After coming so close to reaching the Championship play-offs following a record-breaking run of three promotions in as many seasons, Phil Parkinson has added more proven quality and experience in the division in an attempt to go one better this time, with O’Hare only adding to an intriguing attacking department.

As a result, the playmaker will be hopeful that now is the time for him to finally get his first opportunity at the Premier League, having come close with the Sky Blues and Blades in his career since Villa released him for £0 six years ago.

Despite an initial promise from Steve Bruce, Callum O’Hare was not given opportunities at Aston Villa.

O’Hare rose through the ranks at Bodymoor Heath during a difficult period for Villa, who plummeted down the Premier League table before dropping into the Championship for the first time in 28 years back in 2016.

Although the B6 club would invest heavily, and almost recklessly, during Tony Xia’s ownership tenure, the midfielder was one of the most highly-rated youth prospects at the time, eventually making his senior debut in an EFL Cup victory over Colchester United in August 2017, with Steve Bruce stating: “I’ve been very impressed with him and that wasn’t just his debut.”

However, opportunities would be hard to come by despite Bruce’s initial promise months later, and the opportunity of establishing such claims only increased after Villa’s return to the Premier League under Dean Smith, and after an impressive initial loan with Coventry in League O’Hare was released from his boyhood club during the 2019/20 season.

O’Hare has recently had mixed reactions about his personality, but this has clearly helped him respond to the aforementioned Villa release, and his time at Coventry has undoubtedly proven to be the making of a high-level Championship performer under Mark Robins.

The midfielder’s first regular minutes in the second tier came during the 2020/21 season, but a record of three goals and eight assists while appearing in every league match was a portent of what was to come.

As a result, he was crowned Coventry’s 2020/21 Player of the Season, before adding two more goals in 2021/22.

Throughout his career, Callum O’Hare has received plenty of Premier League interest.

During Coventry’s eventual ascension to the Premier League, O’Hare began to draw a lot of attention, along with Viktor Gyokeres (now at Arsenal) and Gustavo Hamer.

The playmaker did sign a contract extension until the end of 2023/24, a season in which he continued to flourish after missing a significant portion of City’s 2022/23 play-off final campaign due to a serious injury.

When it became clear that O’Hare was unlikely to sign a new contract at the CBS Arena, West Ham United, Leeds United, and Burnley were among the clubs linked with a move, but it came as a surprise when he eventually signed with Sheffield United, given their previous relegation that summer.

O’Hare’s versatility will be a great advantage for Parkinson after the two clubs agreed on a £7 million deal, joining Josh Windass in Wrexham’s creative department.

Just a few years ago, it would have seemed ridiculous to suggest that the Welsh side could entice one of the Blades’ best-performing players, with O’Hare scoring and assisting eight goals last season while winning Player of the Year at Bramall Lane, but that demonstrates the difficulties the S2 club is currently facing.

It’s no surprise that Chris Wilder was anxious to keep Hamer after seeing him rejoin with Coventry earlier this season, but O’Hare will be hoping for third time lucky in the promotion race, having lost two play-off battles in the previous three years.

Furthermore, while it is unclear whether he would have played a key role in Villa’s recent upward trend if he had stayed, the Birmingham club may regret not making a profit on its academy graduate in 2020.
