Abu Kamara and Adrian Segecic were among the Portsmouth players who wished Luke Brooke-Smith well after the winger injured his ankle during training.

The New Zealand international joined Pompey from Wellington Phoenix in the summer and has only played three league games thus far.

However, the 18-year-old is now set for a protracted absence when it was revealed that he injured his ankle in a ‘freak’ training ground incident.

Brooke-Smith also took to Instagram to share an emotional statement about the injury, noting that there could be further issues as he awaits word on the full scope of the situation.

“I have no words for how I’m feeling right now… A freak incident during training resulted in my dislocating my ankle, breaking my fibula, and perhaps damaging my ligaments. I’m doing my best to remain positive at what is a really difficult moment for me because I don’t know the severity yet. I will work tirelessly to return to the pitch and play for this incredible team. Thank you to the entire staff and players for working around me.”

That is a significant setback for both the teenager and Pompey, and many of Brooke-Smith’s teammates quickly expressed their support on social media.

Adrian Segecic tweeted a prayer hand emoji to the boy, while Abu Kamara encouraged him to’stay strong’.

Terry Devlin, Marko Milovanovic, and Marlon Pack were among numerous other Portsmouth players to wish Brooke-Smith well following the loss, indicating how he has been received in the dressing room since joining this summer.

Brooke-Smith has clearly suffered a significant setback, and it is unfortunate that it has occurred just weeks into his first season in English football.

But these things happen in the game, and while he may not have experienced anything like this before at this point in his career, the road to recovery will benefit his mental health.

This is also a setback for John Mousinho, as he does not have the largest squad to deal with, and while he would not rely on someone like Brooke-Smith, he did have a role to play.

But, once again, Mousinho will not be excused because he understands that these things are part of football, and it is about finding the proper formula to guarantee Portsmouth can continue to pick up results as they aim to go on and climb the league.
