Kyogo Furuhashi is the latest flop to depart Birmingham City, having joined the LA Galaxy.

The Japan international arrived in the West Midlands from Ligue 1 club Stade Rennes last summer after a dismal term in France, and he experienced another difficult spell at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park.

In his only season with the Blues, the centre-forward scored just one league goal, and while he did score two in the cups, his time with the club was disappointing.

7Mike Newell

Younger Birmingham City fans will not remember Mike Newell, but many older fans may have forgotten he even played for the club, considering his small effect.

The Blues paid Blackburn Rovers £750,000 for the frontman in 1996, but he scored just one league goal in 15 appearances before being sold to Aberdeen a year later for less than a quarter of the price.

6Kevin Francis

Kevin Francis was another forward who struggled in front of the net during his three seasons with Birmingham in the mid-1990s.

While he scored four goals in six EFL Cup games for the Blues in 1995/96, he only managed two league goals in 41 league outings.

5Alexsander Hleb

Alexsandr Hleb is the most gifted player on the list, having arrived with a strong pedigree before his unexpected loan move to the Blues from Barcelona in 2010.

Hleb was a success at Arsenal for three years, but he struggled at Barcelona and suffered the same fate in the West Midlands, scoring just one Premier League goal in a disappointing spell.

While he had a dismal tenure at Stade Rennes, there was still some hope that the Japan international would be a success with Birmingham, given his goal scoring record with Celtic.

The striker scored 85 goals in 165 appearances for the Bhoys, but only one league goal at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park, and he was dropped from the squad entirely at the end of last season before signing with LA Galaxy.

3Tyler Blackett

Tyler Blackett, another athlete who ended up playing in the United States, has seen his career fade after early promise.

Blackett came through Manchester United’s academy and spent six months on loan with Birmingham City in the 2013/14 season, but he failed to impress in eight appearances for the club.

2Carlos Costly

The Blues paid £500,000 to loan Honduras international Carlos Costly from Polish club GKS Bełchatów, but they may regret the decision.

During his short-term loan in the 2008/09 season, the centre-forward made only eight appearances and did not score once.
