Wrexham are likely to compete with West Brom in the race to recruit Ipswich Town outcast Alex Palmer.

According to the Daily Mail, the Red Dragons have approached Ipswich about signing Palmer as their new goalkeeper for the 2026-27 season.

There has already been some tension between Wrexham and West Brom after the Welsh club signed former Baggies loanee Danny Imray on a permanent deal from Crystal Palace, with the defender joining the Racecourse Ground for a reputed sum of £5 million.

Wrexham are now looking to beat the Baggies to another of their top targets, with many fans of The Hawthorns hoping to see Palmer return given his limited opportunities at Portman Road and the fact he came up through the Black Country’s youth ranks.

The Daily Mail reports that Wrexham have entered the competition to recruit Ipswich Town goalkeeper Alex Palmer.

Throughout the summer transfer window, Palmer was linked with a return to The Hawthorns with West Brom after losing his number one status at Portman Road.

According to the Daily Mail, Wrexham have been in talks with Sunderland about Anthony Patterson, despite the fact that he is worth about £8 million.

Palmer is apparently worth only £3.5 million, making this a more enticing trade.

Why could Ipswich Town make Alex Palmer available?

Palmer joined Ipswich from West Brom during the January transfer window in 2025, and he was a regular for the Tractor Boys as they were relegated back to the Championship, as well as playing their first ten games in the second division.

However, an unexpected calf injury forced him to be replaced by Christian Walton, and he never returned to the first-team fold as Ipswich was promoted back to the top flight.

Meanwhile, Ipswich, now coached by Gary O’Neil, has signed two new goalkeepers in Kayne van Oevelen and Kjell Scherpen, pushing Palmer further down the pecking order and setting him up for a return to the Championship.

West Brom will be concerned about developing Wrexham interest.

While West Brom fans were enthused about the potential of Alex Palmer coming to The Hawthorns, conversations about a deal have cooled in recent weeks, and there are now serious concerns that Wrexham could steal another of their targets.

So Albion must aim to move a Palmer deal forward as soon as possible, or Wrexham may step in and sign another player who may have helped Albion climb the Championship table under James Morrison.
