Sheffield United is involved in a legal dispute with Prince Abdullah, Steve Rosen, and Helmy Eltoukhy ahead of the 2026/27 Championship season.

With fans eager for progress on the pitch, Sheffield United began the season as one of the favourites for promotion after reaching the play-off final, but under Ruben Selles, they began so poorly that it was up to Chris Wilder to return and salvage a 13th-place finish.

COH Sports is expected to become involved in a £100 million battle with Sheffield United, which is just one of the issues looming over business at Bramall Lane. However, it is not the only off-field issue, since points deductions were raised in regard to COH Sports earlier this summer.

Prince Abdullah also claims he is owed money by Sheffield United’s current ownership group, with the previous owner considering legal action. Since then, Sheffield United has faced a winding-up petition.

Sheffield United served a court date for the Prince Abdullah company.

Off-field difficulties have been rumbling on for a few years now, with the Blades starting the 2024/25 season with a points deduction for failing to pay other clubs during the 2022/23 season.

There had been anticipation that this season would be much more settled, with less difficulties to worry about and COH Sports being able to come to grips with the club, but that has already been dashed with less than a month till the season begins.

COH Sports owes Prince Abdullah £35 million. It’s undoubtedly concerning for Sheffield United fans that Prince Abdullah is pushing for this to be settled when the club is already facing legal action from Tom Page over Steve Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy’s initial takeover of the club.

Kris Wigfield believes the matter with Prince Abdullah will be settled before it reaches court, and he does not believe it will have long-term consequences for the Blades, describing the petition as “a commercial game of cat and mouse.”

Kieran Maguire, a football finance expert, has revealed that Sheffield United’s former parent company’s winding-up order is set for Wednesday, August 19. According to the update, COH Sports is being charged “in the matter of the Insolvency Act 1986”.

Maguire, speaking on X, said the deadline could be pushed back, or the case could be resolved before then.

Sheffield United’s summer window has not started yet.

Sheffield United’s start to the 2026/27 summer transfer window has been disappointing, and there is an argument to be made that off-field difficulties have contributed to the club’s poor progress.

However, with just over a month before the deadline, the Blades’ focus must be to ensure that happenings off the pitch do not detract from enhancing Wilder’s squad.

So far, Matt Doherty’s free transfer and Romelle Donovan’s loan move have been the club’s only new additions. Both could be important signings, but they are unlikely to be enough for a team hoping to compete at the top of the Championship.

Sheffield United still has plenty of time to expedite their recruiting, but they cannot afford to let uncertainty behind the scenes ruin what remains of a critical transfer window. Given that there are two additional play-off spots next season, it must be upsetting for Wilder and his teammates.
