Swansea City and Wolves Face Potential Managerial Uncertainty as Champions League Club Target Their Coaches

Sporting CP is considering Cesar Peixoto of Wolves and Vitor Matos of Swansea City if the Portuguese powerhouse decides to fire current manager Rui Borges.

The 45-year-old has been successful with the Lisbon team, winning the league and cup in 2024–2025 and making it to the Champions League knockout stages the previous season, but this season has been challenging.

Despite playing more games than both teams, Sporting CP is now in third place in Primeira Liga, six points behind leaders Porto and behind rivals Benfica. In addition, they had an unexpected Champions League home loss to LASK.

Vitor Matos and Cesar Peixoto are identified by Sporting CP as possible substitutes for Rui Borges.

Borges is therefore under growing pressure at SCP, according to A Bola, and Friday night’s 2-0 victory over struggling Casa Pia won’t have been sufficient to allay any concerns.

According to the update, Swansea’s Matos is one of five names the team is reportedly exploring as possible replacements.

The Swans will fancy their prospects of gaining promotion this season because Matos has done a great job with them, creating a fashionable team that uses a possession-based strategy.

Peixoto, meantime, has a solid reputation in Portugal because to his outstanding work with Gil Vicente during the previous season, which helped him get hired by Wolves.

Although they are in a respectable position right now, Peixoto hasn’t exactly won over Wolves supporters, who are dissatisfied with the team’s performance.

According to the article, Sporting CP is also keeping an eye on Paulo Fonseca, Leonardo Jardim, and Abel Ferreira.

It would also be difficult to lure the three away because they are now employed by Palmeiras, Flamengo, and Lyon, respectively.

Wolves and Swansea might respond differently to Sporting CP’s managerial changes.

First off, there are no signs that Borges will be fired anytime soon, but this weekend’s Champions League match between Sporting CP and Shakhtar could be crucial for him.

Key players at Swansea or Wolves won’t be overly concerned until he is fired, but it would be a very desirable position if it became available, so you can see if Matos or Peixoto were drawn to it.

Losing Matos would be devastating for the Swans since he has been supported throughout the summer and has constructed the team the way he desires. Therefore, if he did go, it would be a major setback.

Regarding Wolves, Peixoto has yet to win over many supporters, who are unclear about his intentions regarding the way he has assembled the team.

Of course, it’s still very early, and it’s important to note that the results have been positive, but if Peixoto were to go, the fans would want the team to find a replacement who could still help them accomplish their goal of making it to the Premier League on their first try.

In the end, this could be one to keep an eye on over the next few weeks. Sporting CP will play Moreirense at home in the league after their match against Shakhtar before the international break, which might be considered the ideal moment for the team to make a move.
