Burnley have confirmed Diego Lopez’s appointment as the club’s chief football officer.
The move has been in the works for some time, with his old club Genoa announcing his exit in early October.
In a statement announcing the Spaniard’s arrival, the Clarets said that the appointment marks “the first chapter of a new era” for the club.
Lopez will be in charge of the club’s football operations, including recruitment and sports structure. However, nothing is mentioned about his involvement in the club’s hunt for a new head coach.
Chairman Alan Pace stated, “This appointment is about raising standards across the entire football club.”
“We sought someone with extensive expertise in recruitment and player development, as well as a thorough understanding of European markets and how they all work together to grow a club over time. Diego has a track record of doing exactly that.
Lopez has previously served as a head scout for Monaco, Lille, Excelsior Mouscron, and Bordeaux, as well as director of sport at RC Lens.
“I am eager to start exploring the great potential of this club,” Lopez stated.
“I understand our objective and believe in Burnley’s potential in the coming years provided we all work together with full determination. From my first interactions with Alan, it was evident that there is genuine ambition and a strategy to match it.
“This club represents everything to the community and its residents. I want our fans to recognise their team in the way we play, the players we sign, and how we represent the club. “The work begins now.”
The Clarets have been looking for a sporting director for quite some time, as Alan Pace revealed at a Fan Advisory Board meeting in April.
