Kieran Maguire has discovered that Southampton have lost £81 million in the last decade. However, when compared to some of their competitors, this quantity appears to be quite small.

Southampton lost a lot of money when Spygate halted their progress last season.
Indeed, winning promotion to the Premier League through the lottery of the playoffs typically results in the lucky few who succeed and go all the way earning £200 million.
The Saints missed out on big money as a result of their historic elimination from the playoffs.
Tonda Eckert has also been fined £28,000 for his involvement, and he was recently sentenced to a suspended six-week ban.
The losses don’t end there, either, as football finance specialist Kieran Maguire has revealed how much money the Saints have lost over the last decade as one of 48 teams to play in the Championship.
Saints have lost £81 million.
Maguire has prepared a list of all 48 clubs that have competed in the Championship at some point over the last decade, and surprisingly, only one of them has made a profit.
Burton Albion are the outlier, as the Brewers—who are now a League One mainstay—can boast a tiny profit of £1.1 million.
Aside from Gary Bowyer’s team, the rest all have losses next to their names, ranging from £162k for Peterborough United to £81 million for Southampton.
This image, created using Valuball, demonstrates why Southampton were so eager to break into the big leagues in order to amass more extravagant riches and escape their £81 million debt.
Surprisingly, having an £81 million loss next to your name seems rather decent in comparison to other more unfortunate clubs on the list, with Bristol City suffering a loss of £259 million.
Middlesbrough, who are at the bottom of the graph, have an eye-watering £268 million in losses to deal with.
Borough have not competed in the Premier League in a long time, while their Championship foe has suffered significant losses.
The Teesside giants are currently in their eighth consecutive season in the Championship, and it is definitely taking its toll, as they, along with Leeds United, have lost the most money of any of the 48 teams mentioned.
They, like Southampton, came close to promotion last season, losing a nail-biting playoff final to Hull City.
Those riches would have been greeted with open arms, for sure, but it turned out to be just another close call for Kim Hellberg’s team.
Boro’s summer spending of about £10 million on Will Lankshear demonstrates that they are not concerned about their resources, and he has already paid back his high price with nine goals.
However, if promotion is not gained soon, these losses will undoubtedly continue to accumulate at the Riverside.
They will be counting on 2017 to be their year, after the turmoil of Spygate undoubtedly ruined their chances last season.
Yet, with so many teams eager to make some money up in the tough Championship, the promotion fight will very fierce and cutthroat, as Southampton strive to mount their own comeback to the Premier Leagie, following two successive seasons in the second tier wilderness, at the expense of its competitor.
