Over the years, the Championship has produced some superb centre-backs, like John Stones, Ben White, and Wes Morgan, who all made their mark in the league before moving on to greater success.
Others, such as Sol Bamba, Richard Keogh, and Curtis Davies, became synonymous with the competition, demonstrating the value of an experienced defender during a gruelling 46-game season.
Center-backs frequently serve as the foundation for a successful Championship campaign. While attacking players naturally draw more attention, a consistent presence at the heart of the defence can mean the difference between a promotion push and an average season.
Leadership, positioning, aerial ability, and composure under pressure are all important qualities, especially in a division where games can be physical and fast-paced while also being decided by small margins. With 24 clubs vying for promotion, play-off spots, and survival in 2026/27, each team will require someone capable of leading their backline.
Some teams have established Championship stalwarts, while others rely on young defenders who may develop into stars. Here’s a ranking of each club’s best center-backs ahead of the new season, from worst to best.
24Conor Shaughnessy – Portsmouth

Portsmouth’s center-back choices are not particularly strong, therefore Conor Shaughnessy’s absence is especially evident when he is injured. The Irishman missed much of last season due to fitness difficulties, and Pompey’s defensive issues have underscored how much they needed him. He is an experienced, physically strong defender who provides John Mousinho’s team with much-needed defensive dominance.
23Andrei Coubis – Lincoln City

Andrei Coubis is still a bit of an unknown at Championship level after joining Lincoln City this summer, but he’s done enough so far to sneak ahead of Sonny Bradley. So far, the Romanian has looked strong in the Imps’ defence, but there are many unanswered doubts regarding his potential.
22Lewis Brunt – Bolton Wanderers

Lewis Brunt has made an excellent start at Bolton Wanderers and appears to be a player who may contribute significantly to the club’s promotion drive. The only little problem is that Steven Schumacher does not appear to have decided on his preferred center-back pairing yet. However, Brunt’s individual successes have provided him with a solid foundation from which to build.
21Ben Wilmot – Stoke City

Ben Wilmot is a competent Championship center-back with experience that is fast building at this level. However, Stoke City’s strength has traditionally come from their defensive unit rather than a single standout person. Even that collective consistency has been erratic at times, making it tough to rank Wilmot higher on our list despite his apparent talent and adaptability.
20Liam Lindsay – Preston North End

Liam Lindsay has been a consistent Championship performer for many years and remains one of Preston North End’s most dependable figures. He isn’t the most flashy center-back in the division, but he understands his duty, competes well, and rarely appears uncomfortable at this level. His knowledge is especially crucial for a Preston squad used to Championship play.
19Dylan Lawlor – Cardiff City

Dylan Lawlor will almost probably rank much higher on such a list in the future, but there is only so far he can go after scarcely playing Championship football. His performance in League However, one stood out, and Cardiff City now have a defender with a lot of promise if he can adapt his form to the second tier.
18Lisav Eissat – Bristol City

Lisav Eissat is another defender who requires more experience to be fully assessed against the proven Championship centre-backs. However, there have already been some encouraging indications, with the Bristol City youngster demonstrating composure and defensive maturity that belies his age. There is enough evidence to suggest he could move up this list significantly if his improvement continues.
17Sean McLoughlin – Blackburn Rovers

Sean McLoughlin is a muscular and underappreciated defender who has quietly established himself as a reliable performer for Blackburn Rovers in recent seasons. He adds physicality to the backline without being limited to winning aerial duels, and his dependability has made him an essential figure at Ewood Park. He may not get much recognition, but his level has been astonishingly consistent for some time.
16Mattie Pollock – Watford

Mattie Pollock is another player with physical presence, which makes him an especially useful defender for Watford, and his role as captain adds to his value. When the muscular center-back is absent, the Hornets appear visibly less secure, which tells its own tale. He is the focal point of the defence, providing leadership, ferocity, and authority.
15Nat Phillips – West Bromwich Albion

Nat Phillips is another straight-talking Championship central defender. He is the type of operator who understands precisely what is required at this level. He is comfortable protecting his own box and has demonstrated an exceptional ability to contribute from the other end, notably from set pieces. West Bromwich Albion have a defender who is experienced, tough, and prepared to put his body on the line.
14Jose Cordoba – Norwich City

Ruairu McConville has been one of Norwich City’s most impressive defenders so far this season, giving Philippe Clement another option at the heart of his defence. However, he is all about potential, and Jose Cordoba’s absence is felt more acutely. There are concerns about the general quality and consistency of the available defenders, but not for Cordoba.
13Matt Clarke – Derby County

Matt Clarke is the glue that holds Derby County’s backline together, and he remains one of the most reliable center-backs on this list. He understands the Championship, reads danger effectively, and gives the reliable presence that managers value. Derby’s defensive structure benefits greatly from having an experienced player like Clarke at its core.
12Stephen Welsh – Swansea City

Stephen Welsh has proven to be a fantastic addition to Vitor Matos’ Swansea City club, bolstering a strong defence this season. The center-back is one of several astute additions made ahead of the 2026/27 season, and his talent shines through, enabling the high-flying Swans take a major step forward. If he maintains his current performance level, he could be an excellent addition.
11Lloyd Jones – Charlton Athletic

This does not apply to every player on this list, but Lloyd Jones may be considered Charlton Athletic’s best player, let alone their best central defender. He is especially effective in his own penalty area, where his positioning, physicality, and ability to deal with danger make him an excellent box defender. Charlton will need his consistency throughout the season, especially against the division’s stronger attacking teams.
10Nathan Wood – Southampton

Kevin Schlotterbeck may eventually prove to be Southampton’s greatest center-back, but Nathan Wood deserves a lot of credit for his growth in recent years. He has gradually evolved into a defender who possesses many of the characteristics expected of a modern center-back, such as physical strength and the ability to contribute in possession. He also has extensive Championship experience at a young age.
9Jimmy Dunne – QPR

Jimmy Dunne’s flexibility makes him an exceptionally vital asset for QPR, as the Irishman can play at both center-back and right-back without seeming out of place. He combines ball skills with a strong awareness of how to defend his own penalty area. Few players in the division can match his combination of dependability and versatility, not to mention the occasional stunning goal.
8Japhet Tanganga – Sheffield United

Japhet Tanganga is a high-quality Championship center-back who belongs among the division’s best defenders. His athleticism offers him an advantage while defending space, and his leadership qualities have grown in importance during his career. Sheffield United has someone who can combine physical attributes with class and perform at a far higher level.
7Christoph Klarer – Birmingham City

On paper, Christoph Klarer and Phil Neumann appear to be one of the Championship’s more solid center-back pairings. Klarer is an excellent defender who brings physical power, composure, and leadership to Birmingham City’s backline. He possesses the characteristics required to become a dominant presence at this level, which might be critical in underpinning any promotion hopes.
6Jake Cooper – Millwall

Jake Cooper is perhaps the Championship’s most experienced defender in 2026, having appeared in hundreds of second-tier games. Surprisingly, his consistency appears to have improved with age rather than decreased. The Millwall captain remains strong aerially, dependable defensively, and extremely experienced, making him one of the most secure picks on our list. He is also a giant.
5Anel Ahmedhodzic – Burnley

Of course, Anel Ahmedhodzic is yet to reach his peak form at Burnley, therefore his prior years at Sheffield United are helping to drive this ranking. His ability is apparent, and his Premier League experience elevates him beyond many of the defenders below him. If he achieves his peak performance, Burnley will have a fantastic center-back on their hands.
4Adilson Malanda – Middlesbrough

Adilson Malanda appears to fit in nicely with Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg’s style. He has the technical ability to play in midfield when necessary, but centre back is his natural and strongest position. That versatility is crucial, but his mix of physical presence, poise, and ability to contribute during build-up play distinguishes him as one of the Championship’s best players.
3Callum Doyle – Wrexham

Callum Doyle is, simply put, a Premier League defender playing in the Championship. He has already made an amazing number of senior appearances for his age and garnered excellent experience at many clubs. The next difficulty is to turn that promise into consistent top-level performance. If the Wrexham star makes the next step in the next year or two, his potential is enormous.
2Ladislav Krejci – Wolverhampton Wanderers

Ladislav Krejci should be far too talented for the Championship given how much Wolves paid to bring him to England. The Czech international has already shown positive early signs, displaying the physicality and technical ability that earned him such high praise prior to his move. After a stop-start start to the season, if he can properly integrate into the second tier, Wolves will have one of the division’s best defenders.
1Konstantinos Mavropanos – West Ham United

1Konstantinos Mavropanos – West Ham United

Even though he can be aggravating, Konstantinos Mavropanos is a Premier League-caliber defender who finds himself in the Championship, making him impossible to pass up at the top of the list. His strength, aerial ability, and threat from set-pieces might make him a valuable asset to West Ham United. Double-digit league goals from a center-back may seem optimistic, but his attacking threat is enormous. He seems far too good for this level.
