Steven Gerrard Delivers Major Wrexham Verdict as Attention Turns to Phil Parkinson’s Future

Tony Cascarino has said that Steven Gerrard does not deserve the opportunity to lead Wrexham, amid uncertainty about Phil Parkinson’s future.

It was revealed earlier this month that the former Rangers and Aston Villa manager is interested in taking over the Red Dragons if a change in the dugout occurs.

The 46-year-old is now unemployed, with his most recent job ending in January 2025 after 59 matches in command.

Gerrard’s most recent job was with Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq, and his final stint in English football occurred at Villa Park, when he was fired in October 2022.

Parkinson has been in charge of the Welsh club since July 2021, overseeing their promotion from the fifth division of English football to the Championship.

Wrexham are looking to challenge for promotion again this season, but have had an erratic start, gaining 14 points from their first 11 games.

Tony Cascarino makes Steven Gerrard and Wrexham claims.

Cascarino claims Gerrard does not deserve the Wrexham job, even if he should be given another chance after failing in the Middle East and at Aston Villa.

The former Ireland international complimented his effect at Rangers and feels failure is a part of management. However, he does not believe he should be considered as a replacement for Parkinson in case of a change at the Racecourse Ground.”Steven did exceptionally well at Liverpool’s academy,” Cascarino told Talksport.

“He got the Rangers job and did fantastically well.

“Things did not go well at Aston Villa.

“He did okay for a period of time.”And then things went wrong for him, and he moved to the Middle East, where he didn’t last long in his position.

“But I believe that failure is inevitable in management. Failure can provide valuable learning opportunities. He deserves a chance somewhere down the line.

“I don’t think he deserves the Wrexham job.”

Parkinson has had a significant impact at Wrexham under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

He led the squad to seventh place in the Championship last season, missing out on the playoffs by two points.

However, the club has had an unimpressive start to the season, fueling concerns about Parkinson’s future.

Wrexham’s Championship Form
Parkinson relieved some of the strain on his position on Saturday, as Wrexham defeated Preston North End 4-1.

The Red Dragons moved up to 14th in the Championship table, with only three points separating them from eighth-place Wolves.

Wrexham’s last five league results.

Opponent (Home or away)

Result

Preston North End(H)

4-1 win

West Brom (Home)

2-1 loss

Derby County (A): 1–1.

Southampton (H)

2-1 win

West Ham (A)

6-0 loss

The Welsh side has won just three of their first 11 games and is nine points behind leaders Swansea City.

Wrexham’s next game is at Blackburn Rovers on October 24th, with a 3pm kickoff.

It is too soon to sack Phil Parkinson from Wrexham.

Wrexham haven’t had the best start to the new season, but Parkinson’s place should be safe.

The 4-1 triumph over the Lilywhites demonstrates the team’s potential when they perform at their best.

It’s far too early to suggest a change in the dugout, especially for someone like Gerrard, who isn’t exactly in demand as he approaches the two-year anniversary of his last managerial role.

Parkinson has done an outstanding job for the club, earning him the opportunity to go through a few difficult times before the owners consider removing him.
