EFL great Billy Sharp discusses the reasons for Burnley’s poor start.
Nicky Hayen’s continuous cutting and shifting has contributed significantly to Burnley’s early season problems.
That’s according to EFL legend Billy Sharp, who believes the Clarets need a solid side, particularly in defence, if they want to move out of the Championship relegation zone.
It follows Burnley’s dismal start to the season, in which they have lost all eight games and conceded 17 goals.
“It’s been a slow start,” Sharp said on the Essential EFL podcast. “They haven’t won any games yet.
“They’ve conceded far too many goals, and if you’d said that about Burnley in the previous two or three seasons, you’d have said, ‘What are you talking about?'”
“If you concede goals in the Championship, you’re unlikely to win many games. You need a firm foundation.
“They’ve rotated the back four almost every game. Kyle Walker has played centre back, right back, and sat on the bench. They’ve also brought in players, but they have yet to find a recipe for keeping a clean sheet or winning.
“I was hoping one of Burnley or Derby would win that game, because I believe one of them would have pushed the button by now, but the draw has left both managers fighting for their jobs at the moment.”
“I’m not putting pressure on them both; it’s just what you’re hearing in the background and from the outside world.
“It’s been a very frustrating, slow start for Burnley which needs to pick up quickly, because that momentum swing from winning every week in the Championship to losing every week in the Premier League is hard to get out of if you don’t do it quickly.”
