Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has criticised the Blades’ “outrageous” schedule in the early stages of the 2026/27 season.

Wilder’s side lost 1-0 to Wolves on Sunday at Bramall Lane, thanks to a late Raul Jimenez goal. Sheffield United had already played their ninth game of the season in just five weeks.

And, as if that wasn’t enough, the Blades must travel to Fleetwood Town in the EFL Cup on Wednesday and Stoke City in the league on Saturday this week before a much-needed three-week international break.

Because this year is a World Cup year, transfer business has been a little slower, so dealing with one of the busiest early-season schedules seen if you get to the EFL Cup third round is quite difficult, something Wilder is fully aware of.

“Everybody else is the same,” he told the Sheffield Star. “We’re all looking for consistency; we’re all seeking to capitalise on it, whether it’s the late transfer window, the lack of timing of players becoming available in the transfer window, or the World Cup being involved.

“I believe we are all in this moment. “I think it’s outrageous, the schedule that we have to play in.”For everyone. Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, and Tuesday at the start of the season. We’re seeing guys get injured – overuse injuries as the game has progressed.”

Chris Wilder believes Sheffield United are being punished for cup progression following Wolves’ defeat.

In the case of Sunday’s defeat, Sheffield United had to play Blackburn on Tuesday in the regular midweek round, whilst Wolves’ encounter with Everton was shifted at short notice to this coming Wednesday, giving them a free week to prepare.

Finally, that is an outstanding issue on short notice, but Championship sides that were knocked out of the EFL Cup got a free week last week or will have one this week.

The Blades, like other second-tier clubs that have come this far in the EFL Cup, will have played Saturday/Tuesday for four weeks before the international break.

11 “I played in an era when players averaged 42 games each season for five or six years. “The game has progressed, but the schedule for everyone is ridiculous,” he added.We have a midweek game; Wolves have the advantage of a free week, and we are penalised for progressing to the next round of the cup.

It’s a ridiculous situation, but it’s one we must deal with. We are in a good place. I appreciated today’s performance; but, I did not enjoy the outcome. But we’re fine.”I believe there is more to come from both the players and the team. There are players returning from the international break, and there is work to be done during that break. But there are some positive indicators today, aside from the obvious.”

Championship sides will look forward to a much-needed rest starting next week.

There are probably few, if any, Championship teams who aren’t looking forward to the extended break following next weekend’s league games.

The three-week gap between matchups will allow the coaching staff to reflect on the hectic start to the season, which must have been tough to do thoroughly after each game with the next one right around the corner.

It will also help players who have missed time due to injury to get closer to a return without experiencing the disappointment that comes with missed games.

And, more crucially, head coaches and managers from across the division will be able to spend some much-needed time on the training field to express their thoughts in the hopes of resolving any concerns from the early parts of the season.

Sheffield United’s start to the season hasn’t been the worst in terms of results, but Chris Wilder understands there are plenty of areas where his team can improve. The three-week holiday couldn’t come soon enough.
