Blackburn have had a frustrating start to the transfer window as they seek to bolster their squad following Tony Mowbray’s return to Ewood Park.

Rovers had a hectic season last time out, with Michael O’Neill joining the club to help them avoid relegation, with many expecting him to take the job permanently.

However, O’Neill retained his position as Northern Ireland manager, prompting Blackburn to turn to Mowbray.

Now, the focus has shifted to upgrading the team, although despite several links, Rovers have yet to make the additions that fans want.

However, in a new development, Mowbray has confirmed to the club media that regular discussions are taking place about how to improve the squad, and he has stated that he is willing to look at some of the best Premier League clubs for younger players to sign on loan.

“We spend a lot of our weekday afternoons in the recruitment department, looking at players and potential transfers.

“I consider both (transfers and loans). I think historically, when I’ve been here, we’ve had Harvey Elliott, Tosin Adarabioyo, Jarrad Branthwaite, and some pretty big footballers who went on to have really successful careers.

“If there are some opportunities to bring in some really highly gifted young players from Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, or one of those clubs in the north west, that I believe would benefit both us and them, I would not say no.

“In a perfect scenario, you would obviously sign and develop your own players. But, if a very talented guy can aid our group, I have no problem taking loan players and want to see the team progress.”

Blackburn must do everything they can to support Tony Mowbray this summer.

As previously stated, Blackburn need to bolster their team, as they were battling relegation last season and could have been playing in League One if O’Neill hadn’t done such a fine job.

So it’s clear that several issues must be addressed, and we know that the situation with the owners indicates that Rovers will not be big spenders.

As a result, it makes perfect sense that they are always monitoring the loan market, and Mowbray’s track record of developing players should make Blackburn an enticing prospect.

The 62-year-old mentioned Adarobioyo, Branthwaite, and Elliott as examples of players that progressed under his tutelage at Blackburn, and it’s something he did at other teams as well, with Amad Diallo being an apparent example at Sunderland.

Other clubs will undoubtedly recognise this, and Blackburn must take advantage of it when attempting to outbid competitors for possible players.

However, as Mowbray notes, it is still desirable to sign players permanently for obvious reasons, and Blackburn must avoid relying on loan players to bolster the squad.

Ultimately, there is a lot of work to be done, and it will be intriguing to watch how Blackburn’s squad looks when they go to Molineux to face Wolves on the Championship’s opening night.
