With the Championship season starting in four weeks, several clubs in the division will be hoping to make the necessary roster adjustments to ensure a successful 46-game season.
This season, the second tier has been restructured, giving several of the league’s 24 teams an even better chance of making the playoffs.
After an intriguing first season back in the Championship, it is fair to say that Birmingham City will be one of the clubs expected to challenge for the top eight, especially if Chris Davies continues to have strong support from Knighthead Capital Management.
It has recently been claimed that the consortium has put an additional £72 million into the West Midlands side, albeit it is unclear how much of that money would be used in the transfer market.
So far, the Blues have completed the permanent signing of Colombian midfielder Jhon Solis, and Dael Fry has been joined on a free transfer after leaving Middlesbrough.
However, only two games into preseason, Davies has hinted at Kai Wagner and Kyogo Furuhashi’s futures, and Football League World’s Birmingham City fan analyst, Jason Moore, has mixed feelings about such developments.
Birmingham City’s reaction to the projected transfer exits of Kai Wagner and Kyogo Furuhashi

Wagner was recruited for £2 million from MLS club Philadelphia Union in early January, and he quickly became a fan favourite due to his defensive prowess as well as his creative skills, having previously been labelled a ‘assist king’ in the States.
However, he is poised to return to Subaru Park after only 16 appearances in all categories for the Blues, who will reportedly profit from a £3.8 million arrangement between the two teams.
Kyogo, meanwhile, was one of several high-profile arrivals at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park last summer, joining from Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais on a three-year contract worth up to £10 million.
The 23-year-old Japanese international struggled to regain form at Roahzon Park after scoring 85 goals in 165 games for Celtic, and the same fate followed him to Birmingham last season.
Kyogo, 31, scored just three goals in all competitions, with his only Championship goal coming against Sheffield Wednesday on January 20th, before his season was cut short in April due to a reoccurring shoulder injury.
Both were left out of Wednesday’s 3-0 win in the ‘Arthur Cup’ against Solihull Moors, with Davies commenting afterwards: “There’s been a few things happening in the background and that will become clearer in the next 48 hours but tonight wasn’t a night to include them.”
Moore expressed disappointment with the news, saying, “Kyogo, it’s just a shame.”There was a lot of expectation, and it just didn’t work out. “I think it’s right that we move him on, get his wages off the books, and get someone who will do the job.”I’ve seen people argue that we should keep him for another season,
but that’s not an option for me given the money we spent and the salary he’s received. “He’s not been good enough,” he said.Moore expressed disappointment over Wagner’s departure, stating that he has been an excellent addition to the team.It appears that he is returning for family reasons,
and I cannot blame him. “Family comes before football.”It’s a significant loss for the team, as he’s been great since his arrival. He was certainly the best left-back in the league after signing, so losing Wagner is massive. “Replacing him for the pennies we spent on him will be quite challenging. Wagner is a tremendous loss.”
Birmingham City fans will likely agree with Kai Wagner, Kyogo judgement

Of course, some will have hoped to see Kyogo try to turn his fortunes around if his fitness issues are resolved, but the truth is that Davies’ attacking department remains well-stacked following the January signing of August Priske, who has already pushed the experienced figure down the pecking order.
He is also apparently making £40,000 per week, which is a large chunk of money to give a player who is not certain to start or influence the majority of matches at this time.
Although Alex Cochrane and Lee Buchanan have returned to fitness in pre-season, Wagner’s loss could be significant. It will be interesting to see how Davies plans to fill the void left by the 29-year-old.
