Southampton’s Daniel Peretz has spoken out on the Spygate saga, with a potential transfer hint emerging

The footballing world has been rocked by Southampton’s now-infamous Spygate scandal, and while the Championship play-offs have since concluded with Hull City defeating Middlesbrough to promotion at Wembley, the Saints are sure to feel the long-term consequences of the scandal as we approach the summer months.

Tonda Eckert’s side were kicked out of Saturday afternoon’s controversial play-off final at Wembley Stadium despite defeating Middlesbrough after an investigation revealed that the Saints had sent analysts to spy not only on the Teessiders ahead of the first leg at the Riverside Stadium, but also on Ipswich Town and Oxford United in previous games.

With divisional status and a lucrative cash windfall at stake through promotion, Middlesbrough lobbied for sporting sanctions to be imposed on Southampton, and that’s exactly what happened as Kim Hellberg’s side replaced the Saints, who have also received a four-point deduction for the 2026/27 season.

It’s not over, though, with new reports claiming that Southampton players are considering legal action against the club over lost promotion-dependent incentives and wage hikes.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Leo Scienza have already spoken out about the affair, which is expected to raise major concerns about a number of futures on the south coast ahead of this summer’s transfer market.

Daniel Peretz, who joined the Saints on loan from Bayern Munich in January, has now joined several of his teammates in speaking out over Spygate, potentially hinting at where his future lies in the coming weeks and months.

Daniel Peretz leaves Southampton, Spygate claims amid transfer update.

Peretz made a huge impact for Southampton in the second part of the season after joining on loan from Bavaria, establishing himself as one of the Championship’s best shot-stoppers.

The 25-year-old has swiftly become a fan favourite and could end up staying at St Mary’s permanently, with Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany reporting earlier this month that Southampton had agreed on a €7-8 million (£6.04-6.9 million) purchase option in his contract.

It’s no surprise that Southampton are allegedly willing to exercise that option. However, Peretz appears to be considering his own choices before deciding whether or not to extend his stay on the south coast.

Speaking to Israeli source Sport 5, the goalkeeper characterized the decision to eliminate Southampton from the play-offs as “frustrating and difficult,” but looked warmly on his time with the Saints and promised to “think things over with a clear head” as he considers his immediate future.

Peretz added that “the sporting director (Johannes Spors”) updated us on how the hearing concluded, which is where we obtained the news.”

“It’s irritating and difficult; we got there, and it was taken away from us. We have no method of changing or influencing it. Instead of feeling down, I should focus on the next steps.I have nothing terrible to say about the club. I love everyone, and I had a great time. We went through a traumatic experience, therefore I need a few days to be with Noa and the family to process everything.”

Southampton can land a big Daniel Peretz transfer bargain.

When it comes to appraising Peretz’s future, everyone at Southampton will most likely be on the same page after the Spygate affair and its aftermath have passed.

A top-flight caliber shot-stopper in the making, the Israeli international demonstrated his talent in the later stages of the season and played an important role in Southampton’s rise to the top six, keeping seven clean sheets in 20 appearances.

The stated purchase option is an undeniable deal for the Saints if they can persuade Peretz to commit to a permanent future in Hampshire, which will almost certainly be determined soon.

That sort of cost for a goalkeeper of his caliber and lineage is quite low, and Southampton was wise to include it in the loan arrangement, but they will undoubtedly face competition elsewhere.
