Late Sheffield Wednesday takeover drama – David Storch reportedly did the ‘right thing’ with Dejphon Chansiri.

Dejphon Chansiri remains a conversation point at Sheffield Wednesday, with the previous owner becoming problematic for David Storch in recent weeks.

David Storch has taken charge at Hillsborough, but the remnants of the club’s Dejphon Chansiri era will remain for some time, as the team seeks to rebuild in League One.

They escaped starting the next season with -15 points, but it was Chansiri’s actions that sent the Owls into administration this season, resulting in an 18-point deduction and Sheffield Wednesday’s relegation from the Championship.

That could have been prevented, but at least they didn’t make another deduction. Storch’s bid fell short of the amount needed to pay creditors 25p in the pound, with Chansiri the primary creditor. However, they avoided it since Storch still has an offer of several million pounds on the table for Chansiri.

The verdict: David Storch makes an offer to Dejphon Chansiri.

That was a key factor in the EFL’s decision to eliminate the aforementioned deduction. This is predicated on Wednesday achieving promotion back to the Championship on their first attempt, but the deal is only valid for a limited time.

We asked FLW’s Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Patrick McKenna if he thinks Storch is doing the right thing, especially because Chansiri also attempted to have the Wednesday takeover canceled late in the day.

He stated: “Regarding David Storch’s offer to Chansiri, he is doing the right thing. During the takeover process, he attempted to communicate with creditors and reach a resolution. He certainly didn’t want to pay Dejphon Chansiri £18 million, and he shouldn’t have. But he was plainly attempting to find a way around it. We now know that Chansiri refused him.

“So, by putting out these sorts of offers to Chansiri, he was able to show the EFL how unreasonable Chansiri was being and how farcical it was that a takeover would potentially fail.”Alternatively, a team may start on -15 because Chansiri was not paid £15 million. We know Chansiri will reject the deal, so I don’t think Storch will pay him the money. So, yeah, everything has been done correctly on our end. Once again, the repulsive Chansiri, with his nasty actions and complete lack of business knowledge, is impeding any deal.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s priority for 2026/27 is now League One promotion.

Wednesday’s rapid return to League One in 2026/27 now feels non-negotiable and absolutely necessary as a result of Storch’s offer to Chansiri. However, it extends beyond that for Sheffield Wednesday.

The longer a team of this size remains in the third division, the higher the chance of stagnation. This includes financial, structural, and player attraction considerations. Momentum fades quickly, and there should be plenty at Hillsborough this summer.

This puts tremendous pressure on Storch and his Arise consortium to make a meaningful early impact. Recruitment will, of course, be critical; they must find players with the quality and consistency to withstand the challenges of League One while also boasting Championship-level talent.

A quick start in the summer window would establish the tone. Building a balanced, resilient side capable of grinding out results while also dictating games will be critical if Wednesday are to avoid a lengthy stay and return to being a dominant force in the second tier.
